I have a Sony DRX-530UL and it's worked perfectly so far (I've only had it a few months). It cost ~$250 I think (I'm a college prof so didn't have to pay for it myself so I'm not totally sure); they're probably a bit less expensive now. It was recommended by one of the tech guys at my college. I like it because it can burn in all formats -- DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW.

what are the minimum requirements for a dvd burner? i have a 566mhz celeron, 256mb ram, 40gig HDD, radeon 7000 pci.....i know its not fast but its a very very stable machine that pretty much never crashes...Would i be able to use a dvd burner...i ask because i have seen on some of the dvd burner boxes they require a 1gig cpu, but i dont see why

I'm sure it will work, just painfully slow. I also assume that board is only USB1.1, and that'll even make it even slower when accessing the drive. All the newer external drives I've seen so far are USB2.0, but are backwards compatible.
