    Hi people
I'm a newbie and would like to say hello
Basically i'm numpty and don't know much about computers so please help
The problem i have is that i want to burn dvd's but i don't seem to be able to get it to work
I have an Advent 7012 laptop which doesn't have an in built dvd writer so i bought an external icy box which has a pioneer dvr-110d inside and was connected by usb and i couldn't write discs without it failing, thought this could be a problem with the usb as my computer is usb1 and the device was usb2 so i changed the icy box for a safecom 5.25 external box with firewire connection but after trying to burn discs with this i find that it still fails,i have friends who are more clued up on computers so if you can give any advice then i'll let them read it to see if it makes sense to them as i know i won't understand
i have tried it at different speeds and use verbatim discs and have ruined plenty

i've copied a log from nero to show whats happening

    Hello dsmithmob,

First click on the pencil/paper icon in the upper right of your post and edit out your Nero serial number that begins 1A....

Your version of Nero is not up to date. The most up to date version of Nero 6 that works well is 6.6.0.18.

    ftp://ftp1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe

There is a newer version 1.39 of your burner firmware here:

    http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2140

The DMA for your CDRW is not on although this isn't causing your current problem.

Do you use this burner to rip your files to your hard drive? Does it work for that? How long does it take to rip a disk to your hard drive using the DVD drive? Can you burn a CD with the drive? Does it recognize and play commercial DVDs?
