I have previously backed up loads of movies usin the tried and tested DVD Shrink/AnyDVD/Nero combination. I have not changed anything as far as i know but i am now getting blank rings on my backups where it looks like chunks have been missed out while burning the discs. I tried using DVD Decrypter to burn the backups as ISO's to make sure the problem was not with Nero but I am still getting the same issue.

I am pretty certain it is not a media issue as i have not changed from my previous backups that worked. I am using Verbatim discs that code out as TY or MCC. They have both worked for a few hundred backups in the past.

Does anyone have any suggestions for me? Is my burner (NEC1300) dying? it has the latest firmware (1.0C) so it is not that either.

    thanks

The NEC 1300 is very old and no longer supported with firmware updates. Spend $40 and get a new up-to-date burner.

Are you getting any error messages at all during burning? It seems as though the laser isn't able to burn in some positions. Does every disk have the same unburned areas?

Am happy to get a new burner if that is what the problem is, but i was hoping to make sure it was not a different issue first.

It is not firmware (i dont think) cos i am using the same batch of discs that i have used before with no problems at all. Sometimes i get error messages, other times i get the standard "all finished ok popup", but the blank sectors happen at different points on the disc.

newegg not an option for me (in UK) but i can get replacement for £30 if that is what i need

Are those MCC discs the new 04 ones? I've seen this problem reported before with those.

What is the exact coding of the disc?

    Exact codes are MCC 03RG20 & TYG02.

    OK. Not the same discs.

Do you have a Nero log? Perhaps that would show something?

I think your version of Nero is a little out of date. The newest update to Nero 6 causes problems, but 6.6.0.18 was pretty stable.

You are using high quality media. Unfortunately your burner is not digesting it.

To eliminate Nero as the problem, output an ISO image file from DVD Shrink and burn that with DVD Decrypter. If you already have DVD Decrypter installed, there should already be a Target Output option in DVD Shrink after clicking Backup to "Create an Image File and Burn with DVD Decrypter" which will eliminate an extra step. You can also try ImgBurn instead of DVD Decrypter if you desire. Links to the software if you don't already have it are in my signature below.

Other than trying to locate some older 4X media, I'm not sure what else to try. I note that the TY media was -R. Was the Verbatim media also -R? Do you get the same errors when using +R type media? Do you have any +RW media to experiment with? Does the drive burn CDs correctly and without errors.

We see this quite a bit with these older burners. This is at least the second one today for this model. So much has changed in the past couple of years. This burner dates back to 2003.

I have already tried the DVD Decrypter route and got the same errors. I have been burning with these exact discs (the TY ones in particular this is my last spindle of a box of 8 i bought) and had no problems.

Will try some +R media, and report back
