I am buying a DVD writer, model, HP 200e in a few days. Will I be able to copy DVD's from the shops and use them as backup for the originals and will they be playable on other DVD players (eg girlfriends or family player). If so is it easy and does anybody have any advice for me.

    Cheers

Paulo5_, First, yes it is easy to burn a dvd to a dvd-rw or dvd+rw, (spend the extra money for the rw's). If I can do it, so can you! You then need to download dvdripper. Rip the original to your hard drive. You will also need to purchase a dvd writting software. Software for burning cd's will not work. It will take you some time to figure out how to run the writting software, so be patient. Getting them to work on your computer it one thing. Getting them to work on a dvd player on a tv is another challenge. That is where I am at right now. Good luck and I hope I have help you.

Alternatively, check out DVD X Copy http://
    www.dvdxcopy.com It's not cheap ($99) but it
automates the whole process of backing up DVDs. I
haven't used it but I've read good reports.

What if you don't have $99 to spare. I've bought a DVDCopy 3.0 from them before and they don't do me any good and it costs me $36.95 when I can get it free here. Anyway, I'll never buy anything from www.321stdios.com ever again. All software I can get for free and they're selling it to me. I don't know about DVDxCopy, but I do know about DVDCopy 3.0 that I bought from them that's not even worth a penny. They stole the software from here and sell it to us. Anyway, why spend $99 when you can backup your DVDs for free? Here's what you'll need:
    1. SmartRipper 2.41 free
    2. IfoEdit 0.95 free
    3. Nero or any burning software, you can use the one came with your DVD burner and it's free also

    4. So you've got all free software, now why would you want to pay $99 when you can backup your DVDs for free? It's your decission. Take care

DVDPlanet, I have a question for you. I have been trying to use Smartripper or DVD Decrypter,IFOedit and Nero. What is with the notepad usage? Can I go another way? I have heard that all you have to do is strip out the extras and give it region free. Then another guide says you have to Demux it. Sometimes the file is still to large. What is the best tutorial or guide for doing this? I have tried at least three different ones. Every guide seems like it is missing key information that screws up the whole process. Any help would be Appreciated! Thanks!

    Dipstick,

Sorry to get back with you late. I usuall don't come here that much, 'cause I'm writing out step by step guides for my members.

Did you know the more guides you read, the more confuse you will be? Yes, you can read through tons of guides and see which one works for you and use that one. It would be better if you can have a step by step guide with all the pictures that walk you through each step.

This is what I usually do if I have a DVD-9
    1. RIP it with SmartRipper 2.41
    2. If it's a screen selection like the NORMAL or WIDESCREEN, I just delete one of the screens and then do GET VTS SECTORS using IfoEdit 0.95
    3. If it's not the above movie then I'd STRIP it first and see if it'll fit into 1DVDR, if not then I'd SPLIT it into 2DVDRs and keep all Extras plus all the MENUS just like the original DVD
    4. I then test it and burn it using my NERO

I would never do DEMUX, ENCODE, REMPEG. WHY? 'cause it would takes up to 20 hrs to do just one movie and plus the degrade in AUDIO & VIDEO QUALITY. Hope it helps and take care
