    Hello,
    My current system specs:

    1.4 GHz AMD semptron
    384 mbs DDR Ram
    1x -40gb seagate hard drive
    1x -80gb seagate hard drive
    Aopen DVD burner
    Toshiba DVD ROM
    128mb Radeon video card

I am thinking that my processor is to slow for encoding, because I get not so great playback. I have tried everything from diff media to diff programs with no luck.
So I did a test using my uncles setup wich has a P4 2.0 GHz and 256mb Ram, using the same software as I did on my PC. The result was a perfect copy of the movie. Anyway, onto my question would a MSI P4MAM2-V Via Socket 478 MicroATX MotherBoard and an Intel Celeron 2.4GHz Processor running a 400MHz bus speed with my original setup be a good Burning system? please give me your opinions:)

    thanks for your time;)

I used an old Pentium 3 450Mhz Gateway w/ 384MB SDRAM ... and my backups turned out fine. Took alot longer but turned out fine.

How fast are you burning? And you said you've tried different media. What brands are you using?

    What programs are you using?

I have used TaiyoYuden 4x, Ritek G04 and G05, maxell , memorex , and FujiFilm. I mostly burn at 4x, but I have tried a few at 2x with no diffrence.
For programs I have used DVD decrypter, DVD shrink, Nero, DVD2One, DVD Fab Express, and a few others that I got from this site.
It could be another problem, but I have searched this site and tried everything exept an upgrade.
I am open to any suggestions you might have:)

    thank you,

Do you have playback problem is you play the files on your pc? The media and programs your using are good ones. the speed your burning at is good.

It could be your burner. Is your firmware up to date?

I'm with flip.... your cpu speed shouldn't affect the quality, only the time required to encode. What do you mean by not so great playback? Pixelating, freezing, grainy, blurry what? And is this on your pc or stand-alone player?

The problem is that a white line will flash across the screen for a split second all through out the movie in almost even intravels and sometimes I get small patches of Pixelating. It does it on my standalone and on my PC. My Firmware is up to date. The wierd thing to me is that on a few backups it played fine with no problems.
    thanks,

I'd have to agree with flip, it may be your burner. The problem occurs on both the PC and the DVD player so that eliminates your playback equipment. Does this happen with the Taiyo Yuden media? Some of the media you listed are not the best, Memorex for example.

You might want to start the update with a different burner after making sure it was not a media related problem. They are getting so cheap nowdays that there is no reason not to get something besides that AOpen.IMHO.

Yes it did it with all of the media. If you guys think that it is the burner then I guess I should try that. Is Aopen a crap brand? Could you recommend one to me.The one on my uncles PC is a BenQ, would that be a good choice?
    thanks,

I like Pioneer but a BenQ would be fine as well. Can you borrow your uncle's? It would be nice to confirm the problem before you spend money.

I don't really have an opinion on Aopen products. If yours turns out to be the problem then I guess I will have an opinion. Does yours have any kind of a warranty?

I paid over $100.00 for my DVR-109 and now I see them for less than $60.00.

Hmmmm, that would be cool if I could borrow his.Ill have to wait to ask him cause it is late here. If the problem is that should I get the BenQ or the pioneer, the reason I ask is because the price is almost the same and I have no clue wich to buy. I am leaning twards the BenQ if my uncles works well in my PC.
    thanks,

Oh and no I dont think it has a warrenty.

    Nitrous,

I am partial to benq's because they are capable of booktyping dvd+r media to dvd-rom thus making them the most compatable format for stand-alone dvd players. My litey will do this to. Pioneers are not capable of this. The best burner is probably Plextor but they are also about double the price of others.

I've been burning -Rs forever so I don't plan on booktyping anything anytime soon. I wonder when the price is going to bottom out. They must make this stuff for almost nothing. Pretty amazing when you consider the precision required. Mostly done with robotics I suppose. Raw materials shoveled in at one end, DVD burners out the other.

Hi again, I purchased a Lite-on drive and it works very well, way better than my Aopen:)
BUT, I figured out that the video wasnt getting messed up during encoding or burning. It gets messed up during the ripping process from the disk. I know this because I watched one of the image files that hadnt been encoded yet using the previewer in DVD shrink and it had the picture problems that I mentioned above. I tried ripping the same movie with three diff drives and got the exact same playback in shrink, so I dont think that it is the drive. Any ideas??

    thanx,

Could the original disk be dirty? Would that cause this problem?

Yes but you would usually get an error while ripping. Try another one of your original dvd's.

Well I tried a brand new DVD straight out of the case and into my DVD Burner and after the rip I still get the playback issue from the image file. I am stumped as to why this is happening.
