dvd burning trial and error

i have an avi movie i want to burn to watch on my stand alone dvd player at home. i know i have to convert it to mpeg-2. yes my dvd player is compatable to play burned dvds. ive tried numerous freeware programs to convert from avi to mpeg-2. then i used ashampoo to burn the movie. doesnt work on my dvd player. i also have video editing software called Pinnacle Studio Ultimate 12. after 2 days goes by of it constantly running i get the movie converted and burned. it works but it will in a sense lock up or pause and get stuck frequently in the movie. most of the time it will get goin again, but sometimes the movie will just stop. im trying tweaks here and there to see if any difference will be made but im tired of wasting numerous dvd-r. so what i need is a start to finish procedure of what programs to use, how to make the quality the best quality i can get on a 4.7 gb disc etc. thanks in advance.

 

To avoid redundancy, you might want to actually specify what programs have you used to do the conversion. What program did you use to burn to disc?
What discs do you use(manufacturer)?

 

program used to burn the disc was in the the first part. Ashampoo the free version. umm...the disc is a memorex dvd+r 4.7 gb. as far as the software/freeware to convert the file i dont remember. ive installed/uninstalled so many over the past few weeks. id remember one of i saw it though.

 

Hi ryanvox, endo told me to tell you to do this :

1) convert avi files to mpeg 2 with dvd flick
2) use dvd shrink to compress if file >4.7Gb
3) output shrink files as iso
4) burn outputted iso file with Imgburn

dvd shrink, Imgburn, and dvd flick are free programs and can be found here at AD

hey bryston thanks for the hit back. in dvd flick there is no mpeg-2 setting. it just converts them to vob files.

 

Ryan, use the convert to dvd (that's mpeg 2)

where you seein that. i see creat dvd, but when i do that it gives me vob files.

 

Vob files are mpeg2.
Should not need to use DVD Shrink,that would be redundant. DVD Flick will make the DVD of the proper size to fit onto a DVD-5 disc.

The discs that you are using might not be the best quality. I'd try some verbatim.
One of the reasons the discs might skip/freeze is a bad burn, on cheap media. Is your burner capable of booktyping? Is your firmware up to date? If the firmware is not updated, you might not have the best writing strategies for your burner and the media that you use, so you'd get a bad burn. How fast do you burn?

 

hey thanks for the guide. as far as i know everything is up tod ate. ill check out some verbatim. i burning slow. usually 2x or 4x.

 

Unless you are using DL discs or RW, burning @X2 is too slow.

 

The problem with that guide is that for burning it says "set "Write speed" to 1x, 2x", and highlights 1X. This can be confusing to new users.

 

I agree, it can be a bit confusing ; it is an older guide. Hopefully no one will drag me into "People's Court" and have to face Judge Judy ! Probably there is a different guide somewhere, a google click away...
