Alright i ripped one of my dvds to my commputer, using dvd shrink. then i used nero burning rom to put the files on the blank dvd. it was all successful, no error messages. i put it in one of my dvd players and it worked fine. then i tried it in another and it gave me a "BAD DISK" error message on my tv screen. does anyone have any advice for me? is there a final step that i missed when i burnt the dvd? please help. thanks

you didn't do anything wrong except.......

there are plenty of reasons why certain dvds won't play in other players:

    1. burning speeds: burn at 4x so there will be less writing errors (rule of thumb is to burn at half the rated speed of the disk--8X disk burn at 4x).
    2. read manual for your stand alone player and use the disks that will play in your player. If your player is less than 2 yrs old then it should play the + or - R disks! I said SHOULD that's why you read the manual.
    3. try booktyping your drive to DVd-ROM so it will make your +R disks more compatible to players. Read this:
    http://k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php
    4. make sure that there are no finger prints or scratches on your disk that make it hard for the player to read the disk!
    5. use good quality media (rule of thumb....buy the ones that are Made in Japan.) Verbatim is a top notch disk and is the only exception to this rule....some Verbatims are made in Taiwan/Singapore and they are top notch! I use Taiyo Yuden, bought online from Supermediastore.com, Rima.com, Meritline.com.... who every has the better sale! And here is a Media guide for you to show you the way to better media:
    http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
    6. and don't burn too close to the outer edge of the disk ..... which will make the disk unreadable! but using good media you will be able to burn close to the edge better than lesser quality media. Just in case I only burn no closer than 4400MB, so if you can set your programs to that, all the better!

follow these little tips of the trade and you'll have better success! good luck.

why the +R media is better than the -R media

IHoe you are over his head, dude try a simple way first do some homework on DVD Shrink,DVD Decrypter, and ANYDVD. Anydvd runs in the background so you can copy dvd's it cost money but worth every penny Shrink setup with Decrypter will rip the movie and burn to a disc USE Verbatim dvd - untill you are more advanced Read the guides on afterdawn

hey i did every thing right, and i know that my dvd wont read it is because it most likey doesnt support the format, cuz i did the same exact thing with a different type of dvd and it works fine. i did it with a nexxtech 8x 4.7 GB DVD R. im not sure if its + or -, cuz all it says is DVD R. i didnt know there was such a thing. have you guys heard or know of these before. it works with all dvd players is all i know.

and ihoe u didnt do all that work for nothing. i tried it all out and i already know about writing speeds and how you should do half of the speed it says. scratches and fingerprints might make it not work is a given. everyone should know that. about the booktyping, it says if u have an ISO which i dont know much about ISO's, but what im doing now seems to work fine. i will do more research about ISO's, but the way my files have been ripping to my pc are in video_ts folders, which only contain IFO's and VOB files.

sorry to inform u but these r not quality media whatsoever, just look on Ihoe's media guide link and u will see they are in the lowest level of quality.

u might be right that your player doesn't play +R's, the way u can know for sure is get some +R's that r high quality like Verbatims, or sony(Made in Japan),Maxell(made in Japan), and if those dont work then u know for sure the it cant play +R's.

also if u still have the book or manual for the player it should say what formats it could play

    >>i already looked in my dvd players manual and it just says dvd.

If that's all it says without mentioning all the various types, i.e. -R,-RW,+R etc. you are lucky any burn plays. Buy a new unit.

hey i was reading that dvd media guide and i read that just because the dvd is from a good company like sony or something doesnt mean that that company makes the dvd and that it could be cheap. is this the same thing with verbatim or are all verbatim dvd'd good quality.

Unless your burner can bitset +R to DVD-ROM stick with the -R's for better standalone compatability.
