DVD CD problems

    Hello

    I'm new here. My DVD CD Drive HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GSA-H21N only plays DVDs but can't play anything else. I can't even install software from a CD. It came with my Dell destop which runs on XP. A friend told me to uninstall it and then let Windos Update correct the problem. Is this correct? Can anyone help me with this problem?

    To uninstall the drive:
    Right click on 'My Computer' > 'Properties' > 'Hardware' > 'Device Manager' > click on the + sign beside 'DVD/CD-ROM Drives', Highlight/right click and select 'Uninstall'.
    Uninstall the drive and reboot.
    Test the drive again.
