my question is: I have a dvd player, but i want to make "clips" from a home made dvd, and put it on my hard drive. Can I do this with a dvd player?, or do I need a dvd burner? and if so, what is the best free software to do this task?

You will need a burner if you want to put your clips on a disc but if all you want is to keep them on your HDD, your DVD-ROM will do. Programs like DVD Shrink and VobBlanker can make clips.

Best to now convert them into something like AVI or WMV.
