    Hi acdc101
Those are classic signs of bad media along with a high burn speed on them. The Maxell should be good if made in Japan. What's the rated speed of them?

What's the make and model of your burner? Is the firmware up to date?
Best to keep up to date - helps the drive w/ new media codes and the read/write strategies.

Also, sticky paper labels applied to the disc, can cause reading problems. They can make the disc off balance, and the slightest bit of wobble can make it so it doesn't read correctly, therefore getting the pixellating you're talking about.

If you're using paper labels...........stop. Use a Sharpie marker.
Binkie is right. This is just another possibility.

As said.......Maxells that are made in Japan, are very good media. It will say on the package, where it's made (in small print). Usually it's somewhere near the bar code. The [bold]only[/bold] media you want that's made in Taiwan, is Verbatim. It's also very good media.
    Good luck!

sorry but the only brand that is made in taiwan and that is top quality is Verbatim brand.
edit- ooops missed the part where u said this already

If u relly want to see who made them u can open dvd decrypter have it on MODE/ISO/Read and put one of the disks in and see what the manufactor ID: is?

heres a guide, pretty accurate except the part about TDK being 1st class media

I'm afraid not. Take them back, and see if there's any on the shelf that's made in Japan. If not, try to get some Verbatim discs.
Best Buy usually has Verbatim. It may be touch and go on finding Made in Japan Maxells, on the shelf. I usually find them at Wal Mart, believe it or not.

The only Maxell you want is "Made In Japan" by Hitachi Corp. The Maxell "MIJ" by Hitachi Corp. is ranked "1st class media" among the famous Taiyo Yuden (Yuden Co. Ltd) and Verbatim (Mitsubishi Chemical Corp.) These are the only 3 media that I used and I've never experienced any playback issues whatsover.

    More than likely.
Burn the Maxell's at half the rated speed.
Make sure your drives firmware is up to date.
No multitasking and shut down any unneccesary programs when burning.

Give that a go and let us know :)
