Just installed Decrypter onto my PC and got the following error MSGs:

"Drive C:\ (FAT32) does not support single files >4GB"
"Drive E:\ (FAT32) does not support single files >4GB"

Drive "C" is obviously my 20GB interal hard drive. Drive "E" is my 80GB Iomega external hard drive which I got to solely to put nothing but ripped video on to it. How do I get around this dilemna?

Try ripping in file mode in Decrypter. Are you running XP you could think of converting to NTSC format :~)

I have FAT32 and you don't need to change anything or do anything different.Burns fine either as a .iso file or using file mode in the decrypter program.Don't let the message bother you, you can continue without any worries of a successful back-up.

peanuts2 thanks for responding. The Fat32 file system can only support files maximum 4Gb. So if reading as an ISO, a dvd-9 could be 8.5GB, so there could be a problem. Thats why dvl69ers was getting a warning. dvl69ers was asking how to get around this, arniebear told him exactly how to do so. Could you explain how this is incorrect, how it is possible to rip an ISO image greater than 4Gb to a file system of Fat32? I'd love to hear from you :)

    peanuts2,

If you're going to be doing much DVD work you need to have NTFS. FAT32 only handles 4.5g files and NTFS will handle 10g+ files. Most of your DVD's are going to be larger files.

A lot of people don't want to reformat their drive, you don't have to. You can partition it and have both. That way you can work with larger DVD files and leave the rest of your stuff at FAT32. If that still intimidates you there is a free software called Partition Magic 8 that will do it for you although it's really not hard to do without it.

Since dvl69ers has an extra HDD he should go ahead and format it to NTFS, he will still have his internal 20g HDD to operate his PC on FAT32.

    Hi folks
I'm not discounting what bigorange says about the need to convert your file system, but since I was bored, and curious, I decided to experiment with dvd decrypter.
I have 2 harddrives, one has my OS, which is FAT32, and my storage drive has NTFS.
I always rip to my NTFS drive, but just for argument sake, I ripped a 7.5gb ISO to my FAT32.Dvd decrypter splits the iso into 2 parts to accommodate the FAT32 file system.I have a MDS file, and 2 ISO's one named xxxI00 and the other xxxI0I.

So peanuts2 is right....dvdd does work with ISO's on FAT32.

bigorange is also right....you would be best served to either convert, or partion your drive.

You asked peanuts2 to explain....I explained.

I understand it's best to rip in the file mode, and I agree, but my point is, ISO's will also work, even on FAT32.

Sometime these thing take a life of their own. We forget the original question. Look this the 10th post but dvl69ers who started only posted once. I know peanuts2 was correct it could work, but it answered nothing for the original question.

I should have asked how to do it as one ISO, if it has to be broken up what's the point? Might as well rip in file mode if it has to be broken up.

Maybe this person doesn't want to re-rip it in the file mode, so like I said a few posts ago....peanuts2 is correct.Just click continue and the iso gets split automatically.

You burn the 1 MDS file, you dont burn the ISO's separately.

The idea of help forums, are to have different people, post different solutions to a problem. Then the person with the problem, can sort through the answers, and find the one that works best for them.
There aren't many problems that have just 1 solution.

LOL, well, I think we've established it can be done either way. But if you do a lot of DVD work NTFS is DEFINITELY the optimum choice. Besides, Decrypter isn't the only DVD software out there.

I think it's really funny the original poster, dvl69ers, hasn't said a word since the original question. LOL How about you jim? ;>)

i must agree with jim_dandy. i was tempted to change from FAT32 to NTFS. but have had no probs with burns to date size wise. decrypter always selects the single MDS file and away she goes. so i did'nt bother.@bigorange your right i think he/she was probably a little over awed :). just reread the thread and of course Ppower is right. we all forgot to say dvl69ers needs dvd shrink to compress from dvd-9 to dvd-5

I don't know how to really explain how FAT32 works for me.I was concerned about the warning message when I first loaded dvd decrypter on seen the message in the log.I must have read something about FAT32 and it's use on www.mrbass.org.I try to save as much time as I can when backing up a movie with dvd shrink and decrypter.I have checked the box to use the .mds file in the dvd decrypter program under tool, settings, ISO readmode button.I just open the disc let the program analize and select the burn image and create .iso with dvd decrypter.Never had a problem using FAT32 and read that you can use NTFS but it is not nessasary.dvd shrink automatically creates the .iso when you choose to use it to burn the image to dvd decrypter.Usually the files are split into four or five files on my hard drive.I can tell them apart from the others and see the .iso file or the .mds file. The .mds file is only 5k in size but it burns all the files needed for your back-up in dvd decrypter. My computer is atleast 4 years old and I only have a 30gig hard drive. and it's nothing special.I can tell you that I have fat32 and have the same log message as you and I can burn with no issues with this old thing.I use to use filemode in dvd decrypter and burn with dvd shrink but it took to long and after saving all the files seperatley and then opening them up in shrink and having the shrink program save the movie file compressed to 4 gigs on the hard drive. So I use to waste atleast 12 gig of hard drive space that way.I haven't tried to make just a 8.5 gig .iso file on here and I don't think it would work on FAT32.I just burn this way and it works,Thats all I can say.I'm in the process of building a new computer with a dual layer burner. From that point I'll try loading NTFS on a bigger hard drive.I don't know If this helps any or makes any sense but I hope it helps you some what.

If I may interject - the original post said

    " ... got the following [bold]error MSGs:[/bold]

"Drive C:\ (FAT32) does not support single files >4GB"
"Drive E:\ (FAT32) does not support single files >4GB" "

These are not ERROR messages. They are merely information. When Decrypter rips the files off the original, and you have it set to defaults, it autmatically splits the files into @ 1 gig files (or you can select larger or smaller sizes). See Tools>Settings>IFO Mode, Options: File splitting.

The point I'm attempting to make is that this isn't a problem that needs fixing. I've used Decrypter and Shrink on both Fat32 and NTFS. The process works on both.

I do agree, though, that if you are building a new system, go with NTFS as it is a more efficient use of HDD space. And Decrypter won't give you that message.

    - i see what's happened here, that helpful warning message has implied to the original poster that he has a problem when he hasn't.

I too only very recently went NTFS, but not cus i needed to, just cus i thought i'd be a bit more modern. So for me, i happily recommend either to people, as there's plenty of life in FAT32 yet.

Though i tend to avoid commenting on NTFS as it's one of those passionate subjects. Only a few days ago i read a post where someone was categorically stating that FAT32 CANNOT be used for dvd ripping. I corrected his statement but he continued to stick to his guns so i left it there. Just my five pence
