    DVDFab HD Decrypter is updated at the same time the retail programs at DVDIdle are updated. It's the same decryption software as in the DVDFab Platinum. The freeware is just the decryption and ripper portion of platinum with limited function. You're limited to Full DVD and Main Movie as ripping options in File or ISO mode. The other options on the menu aren't functional. Click one other than the functional ones and it says available in Platinum. Best to use the File mode, it's default; you have to select ISO output. Updates are always free and as mentioned, done the same time as retail.

    I have no idea what your problem was a year ago, but the program is one of the best decryption programs available. With support and regular updates, I'd say it's time to try it again. If you need any help, check for guides here at AD. It really doesn't need a guide, the interface is pretty straight forward. Open the disc, select Full or Main Movie, check and/or set the output file location, and let er rip.

    Get the latest version here. A lot has changed along the lines of protection the past year. http://www.dvdfab.com/free.htm

    Thank you again, PacMan 777, I will definitely re-try DVDFab. I'm just so used to the other three (3) pieces of software and have been happy with them, especially, the audio options associated with films. From what you described, such options are not available with DVDFab, in the free version...doesn't this cause issues in playback? Usually, I have to uncheck certain audio and language options which are part of the original source DVD. Are you happy with the quality of the burns you might undertake?

    The issue I had, was the size of the rip, as I had no idea how to shrink the ripped video, so for me it was pointless. Then a friend advised me, and the next issue was using ImgBurn to burn the files, but they wouldn't work in any player I tried.

    Clearly, I'm not as adept as you where all of this is concerned, so as a result, I appreciate any and all advice individuals such as yourself afford newbies such as me! :) Best, PY

    Hi Binkie7, Thank you for the info, especially, by alerting me to what happened to my post from this morning, as you could tell I'm definitely a "newbie"!LOL! I've tried what you suggested and, for me, it didn't work, so I'm onto the cue for my pc manufacturer! Thank you again! PY

    If you're that big a fan of DVD Decrypter, use RipIt4Me. It uses DVD Decrypter as the ripper and does all but a few of the new releases. I've found it can't do Blade: House of Chthon and Collier & Co. Hot Pursuit. That's not too big a loss for most people. AnyDVD can't handle those either. So far the only decryption program I can find that will do Full DVD for those two is DVDFab HD Decrypter.

    @PY2000
    No worries - all is good :)
    Too bad those tips didn't work for you though :(

    @PacMan777
    Oh and have all the good ones :) The ones I'm talking about are the ones that nothing else can rip cause of scratches and maybe a bad press - that's what I meant by less than perfect :)
    I'll use decrypter by it's lonesome on those that it can handle - usually my older ones. On the very few newer ones that I get read errors on w/ the 'heavier' protection then I'll use ripit4me.
    Just my preferences :)

    Missed your post on this one. Ripping with DVDFab is little different than ripping with DVD Decrypter. You get the full DVD content. You still open the DVD files in your choice of transcoding software (where you can edit languages, audio and video content). It's just not as easy as having RipIt4Me open files for you in DVD Shrink. You can still burn with DVD Decrypter if you like. ImgBurn is the updated version of the Decrypter burner ware by the same author. I buy some pretty crappy DVDs at sale occasionally and the program rips them. I have one drive that reads better than the other. So, there seems to be more than one variable when it comes to reading less than prime media.

    No playback issues. I get excellent quality from the different decryption software and the various transcoding and encoding software burning the output with various burners. I've got a list of software that reads like a whose who of backup software. For my preferred use, without using programs to stay current, I use RipIt4Me or DVDFab HD Decrypter to bypass copy protection, RB/CCE to encode, and Nero Express to burn. None of the transcoding software can compare to RB for higher compression rates. Video quality is just as good when using any of the software within normal parameters.

    DVDFab HD Decrypter and RipIt4Me are free. RI4M won't do a few of the newer releases. So far neither will AnyDVD. So there's two freeware programs that bypass the copy protection, one you say you're familiar with. Use the last version of RipIt4Me when/if you go to use it, 1.7.1.0. DVD Shrink still does a good job transcoding and doing minor edits. It even does some movies by itself, when they have weak copy protection. You can still burn with DVD Decrypter, same as before. I'd suggest ImgBurn, which is free. The point I'm making here is that you don't need to change your process very much and the entire job can be done with freeware while getting good quality output.

    Here's my solution for those badly beat up DVDs. It brings them back as long as they aren't deeply gouged or have the inner dye layer damaged.

    [IMG]

    I've got an old copy of 321's XRescue that saves files from bad discs that DVD Decrypter can't handle. Too bad they were put out of business.

    I guess we've all got our favorites. LOL I've not used that disc resurfacing tool or the XRescue in the longest. They're still there if I need them though. ;)

    LOL The name's not Binkie, but maybe I can answer your question. DVD Decrypter is more adjustable with the many settings available. It appears to slow down more and the number or retries can be preset, to get the most data possible and still not keep trying for an overly long period. Plus there's the various decryption modes. The only thing I've found to beat it is XRescue and that program is no longer available. Even if a copy can be found, getting it activated to work may not be possible. Anyone know where a 321 support site is? ;)

    DVD Decrypter would still be my choice if it was updated. For a long time I ripped with DVD Decrypter with AnyDVD in the background for bypassing copy protection. Then the studios started tampering with structure and that ended using that combo.

    When you rip with DVDFab HD Decrypter and it hits an error, it gives you the ignore option or ignore all, without doing the multiple retries. Plus it decrypts only in File mode. Even when ripping in ISO it appears to rip in File and then create an ISO.

    Hey born2ride
    The real binkie here :) PacMan pretty much spelled it out so not much more to add.
    But yeah it's still my fav when it comes to those scratched ones. Though if too bad it still won't do it. But it's done the job for me when others failed. That and turtle wax :)

    I'd never try to impersonate anyone as famous as you Binkie.

    It's all about refraction and laser optics. Lens repair kits for glasses, buffing compound, mildly abrasive car polishes, yellow markers, toothpaste... and the list goes on. Anything to polish or remove the scratches from the polycarbonate outer layer so the optical head can read the data on the inner dye layer.

    Ive been ripping DVDs for about 4 years now and now I am having real problems like never before. I normally use Shrink with AnyDVD they rip with DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn. When I go to rip the movie onto a disc using either DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn the movie rips to about 8% then stops all together until it tells me it has a I/O error and on the bottom of the message it says Write Error.

    I use Windows Vista Ultimate and Im only getting these problems now. How do I take the ripped movies I have on my HDD and rip them to a disc using another program if I cant get DVD Decrypter to work. I tried using DVDFab HD but something failed using that as well.

    Any and all suggestions would be a huge help. I have a Sony Vaio RB-43 with a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-109 in it. I havent messed with the firmware yet cause I was thinking of just replacing it. Would that piece of hardware cause these problems?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Pack Man 777, Thank you again for the information. I am using the last version of RipIt4Me, which is used in conjunction with DVDDecrpter and DVDShrink. I have never used DVDDecypter as a stand alone application. It is with that process that I receive in DVDDecrypter the error messages I posted. Since you use RipIt4Me, as well, are you not receiving the same error messages when it moves to the DVDDecrypter phase? I still believe the error messages may be a settings issue but not sure. For burning I use ImgBurn.

    Last evening I used DVD Fab (the version I have is 3.1.1.2) and it seems to do just fine, in terms of backing-up the video but, I don't see any of the options you mentioned (beyond those unavailable in the free version), is that because I'm not using a separate transcoder, and is there a free application you would recommend? I don't think I understand how DVD Fab compresses the video so it will fit on a DVD, as in RipIt4Me, there are options to choose, perhaps, you could advise?

    Thank you again!

    @Spiral216
    Update the firmware - try 1.58 from here - link.
    If you get a target not found you'll need to check Sony's website and see if they have one available.
    Looks like you still have the original firmware so without updating it some newer media may give it a problem.

    Ritek is decent media by if after the firmware update still fails try different media like Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim or made in Japan Sony, Fuji or Maxell.

    Take the burn speed down from max to 8x or lower.

    Go to http://www.dvdfab.com/free.htm and download the latest free DVDFab HD Decrypter. Your software is seriously out of date. As I said, it's free. Then you'll need to keep it updated.

    From your post it appears you don't have a complete understanding of the software. RipIt4Me (RI4M) uses DVD Decrypter and incorporated FixVTS software to bypass copy protection and process the source files for structural compliance. RI4M then opens the files in DVD Shrink using the quick analysis to check the files for DVD compliance. Usually if quick analysis completes properly, the files will transcode properly with Shrink. At that point RipIt4Me is done. You have the option of closing Shrink and using any backup software of your choosing. Transcode the cleaned source files, encode them or burn to DL, your choice. For Shrink users RipIt4Me makes things easy. The files are loaded for you. Howvever from there on it's strictly DVD Shrink and burn either with a supported burner or do it manually.

    All that said, you use the decrypted files from DVDFab HD Decrypter in DVD Shrink the same as you would with RipIt4Me. The only difference is that you have to load the files by selectiing Open Files from the menu, browsing to the source files location, and selecting them. Audio and subpictures can be unchecked as usual in Shrink or the Reauthor can be used for more extensive editing. I hear there's even a way to edit using Still Image in Full Disc mode. You might want to run a search on that. The Help selection in the Shrink menu still works as well. Once Shrink has transcoded (shrunk) the output files to fit a DVD5 you burn in the normal way, use one of the supported burners or copy to hard drive and burn manually from there.

    Hope that helps. From your post it seems you thought RipIt4Me was doing more than it actually was. I know, it rips in Full DVD, Movie, Movie+Menu, and ISO and DVDFab only has Full or Main Movie. But audio and subpicture is still removed in the transcoder. I use this software all the time and I don't see where you could be having problems if you're using it correctly. There's guides all over the place and there are links to guides in the Help Topics as I mentioned earlier. The one from Doom9 is specific for 3.2.

    Good luck.

    thanks for the info. its seemed the older vs ripped damaged disc better than the newer ones. i never really got into using decrypter.. in the beginning i had so much trouble with ripit ,decr. i just gave up and used dvdfab. it was sweet when they link all the apps together then i enjoyed ripit.
    back to the point it seem even the earlier vs of fab rip damage disc better
    unless it just a drive issue with my new pc.
    i have more issue with light abrasion on disc now then before.
    yes they are damage. lol dam kids he must think look yummy!

    Sounds like you need one of those disk resurfacing tools I showed the pic for. It's got a slightly abrasive wheel. You spray water on the disc and give it a few turns. I noticed they had one at the local rental store for their DVDs. The newer model sets on the table instead of being hand held. A couple of years ago I was buying a lot of used DVDs and the "grinder" got a lot of business.

    As for reading with different software. I don't seem to have a problem there. Everything I use seems to do a good job. The only time I need something special is when a disc is slightly mutilated. That's when DVD Decrypter can come in handy for some people. That's when I use the resurfacing tool and XRescue if there's still a damage problem.

    A few years. XRescue was a 321 Studios product. 321 was the company closed down by prosecution that set the precedent for shutting down other decryption software suppliers. If you notice, only the off shore locations are able to keep selling and updating those programs. In countries abiding by international copyright laws decryption software is illegal. If Slysoft or RipIt4Me were in the US, UK, or other country that abides by international copyright laws, they would be shut down.
