The problem is that in DVD Decrypter 3.1.9.0, when I go Mode>ISO>read, it reads and creates an .ISO file. The afterdawn guide says to look for a .DVD file to put back onto DVD-R when you switch to ISO>write, but there is no .DVD file showing, only the .ISO (running NTFS Win2k service pack 4). Trying to write a DVD from the ISO, the process appears to go normally, but creates a disc that doesn't play and appears to have 0 bytes on it. 'File F' in the Mode menu extracts the VOB files and they play off the Hard Drive just fine, but, I can't seem to write a disc from these files, or maybe i just don't know how. Anyway, so far, no luck getting anything on a disc and lots of pricey coasters. The original discs are under 4.3 gig with no CSS, which brings up another question: should I change to 'none' under Tools>Settings>CSS>CSS Cracking Methods? I'm using Decrypter because I don't know for sure that I won't run into CSS down the line. Two hours of lecture material organized as one title / 27 chapters into 4 half hour lectures available from a root menu, which is in chapter 29.
I have a LaCie external firewire 4x DVD-R/RW dvd writer and do not know much about what the guides are talking about when they mention ASPI layers. I looked on the Ahead site, as instructed in the guides and could find nothing that explains it.
Please help. I have to make single fair use copies of over 100 DVDs for free lending within the company and am not making much progress.
    Thanks,
    Paul

    Paul,

Have you attempted to burn the ISO to disc ??

That's what you do with an ISO file, burn it :)

Yeah, Pete, I did, and it appeared to burn normally (not that I know much about normal when it cmes to DVDs), but it wouldn't play, and when I right clicked it and looked at it with 'properties' it either said it was 'all full' or 'all empty' and reported zero bytes. But I don't know if that's meaningful when it comes to dvds. Could it have something to do with Decrypter recognizing the writer? It seems to know it's there (identifies it by name).
I was able, after the post, to burn the first disc successfuly with Nero 6, because it has no CSS, but I would still like to learn how to get DVD Decrypter working, because I may run across CSS in the future, even in this lecture series I'm doing, and it does seem like a well written piece of software, just not terribly well documented. I heard there was a way to integrate DeCSS into Nero, and I want to investigate that too.
Any idea why the afterdawn guide says to look for a .DVD file, when all you get is a .ISO?
    Thanks for your answer, Pete.

    Paul,

The truth be known, I use Decrypter in the "file" mode. Before doing anything, I create a folder on my “Desktop” which I name “All DVD Work”. Prior to ripping a DVD, I create a file in my "All DVD Work" folder and name it for the DVD I'm backing up (right now it's "The Fighting Temptations") and in that file I create my VIDEO_TS folder and select that in Decrypter's destinations box.
    I.e. All DVD Work/Fighting Temptations/VIDEO_TS

When Decrypter is finished, all my files are now in my VIDEO_TS folder.

What I want to do is get all of your files in that folder if I can so that Nero can burn it. Why Nero ? Because if we can get the files right, we can set Nero to your needed 100 DVD’s. When Nero begins burning, each time a disc is done, the tray will pop out, you’ll put another disc in and the burning continues :)

    Sooooooo, let’s try 2 things -

First, if in fact there is no CSS on your master disc, you should be able to make a disc to disc copy using just Nero -

Failing that, let’s rip your DVD with Decrypter, in the "File" mode, using the suggestions above and then following the directions below, burn with Nero -

    Step by Step –
    Do not use Nero Wizard.
When you open Nero Burning ROM, you will be at the “New Compilation” window. Directly under the title “New Compilation” is a choice block to choose either DVD or CD, choose DVD. Directly under that click on the DVD Video Icon. Then click “New” in the upper right corner of that screen, NOT the main screen.
You now are in the DVD Video window. In the left screen, click VIDEO_TS. In the File Browser screen, 3rd from the left, trace your path to the VIDEO_TS folder, the one you made earlier holding all of your files and click on that folder. All of your VIDEO_TS files are now opened in the right screen. Click on the top file, hold down the “Shift” key and then click the bottom file thereby hi-lighting the entire column of files. Click and (holding the left mouse button down) drag the entire column of files to the open screen, second from the left.
Now click the icon on the task bar that shows a match on a disc, and then click “OK” and now ? “Burn Baby, Burn !” ” “Let me hear you say it, Who’s your Daddy Now ???”
(Wheeew, now I need a cigarette)

Guess what my Friend ? You are done !!!

NOW, STEP AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER ! !
Keep all fingers and toes away from Ms. Computer. Never mess with the lady when she’s working – it would be hazardous to your health, you understand -
Go and have your coffee, when Nero is done, she will let you know ;-))

    Enjoy, “Pete”

Wow, Pete, that's really a thorough explanation. Really nails it down. So, if I understand you correctly, your main use for DVD Decrypter is to get the vob files out past the CSS, and then you use Nero to do the actual burning. Makes a lotta sense, since Nero is supposed to have this neat technology that detects any writer.
Just so you know, though (since I seemed not to have explained it too well), I need to burn one copy EACH of 100 DIFFERENT DVDs, not 100 copies of ONE DVD. That's what makes it so arduous. And I've gotta ink-jet-print 'em too, each one with a DIFFERENT title (although the format is very simple and differs only in the title of the lectures). If you, or anyone, know of a work flow method that helps with that, I'd certainly appreciate you mentioning it.
It's too late tonight to try the method you outlined (best not to tackle new stuff when one is tired), so I'll try it after work tommorrow or on the weekend and let everyone know how I made out, and I'll get a hold of a CSS encoded disc to try, too, just to be sure I've got that down.
After that, the last mystery to crack, just for laughs, is how to do the burning with DVD Decrypter. I really want to send that guy in England who wrote it a few bucks (or should I say 'pounds') and I can't bring myself to do it until I figure out what to use as 'source' when you are burning with Decrypter, or what 'mode' to use or how to get it to recognize the writer and make it actually burn, or whatever hitch is holding it up from actually producing a disc on its own after it so neatly extracts the vobs.
    Thanks again, Pete.

Alrighty then, - all I can say Paul, better you than me lol. 100 DIFFERENT discs - what a job -

Ok, as far as using Decrypter, I do so when backing up a commerical DVD. One that's under 4.36GB. (I do like my nice, easy movies :) Use Decrypter in the ISO mode. I think your lecture stuff might by slightly different and that's why you're having trouble.

I'm going to dig out a DVD and refresh myself, it's been maybe a year since I've done it -

    Catch ya later,

    Pete
