Hello all, I just recently got a computer from a friend, and he told me it was fully functional, but I can't seem to get the DVD-ROM to read DVD-R. I get the message: Windows cannot read from this disk. The disk might be corrupted, or it could be using a format that is not compatible with Windows. It will read CD's, CD-R's. I have not checked out a regular DVD (simply b/c I don't have one). I tried updating the drivers, and nothing seems to help. I run XP, the DVD-R was burned with Nero. Thanks, Kigroy
Hi, I could be that the disc you're trying to use was poorly burned and has corrupt data on it as windows is reporting. What make/model is the drive? Firmware version? I'd highly suggest trying a factory DVD in the drive.
The make and model is a NEC 5700A (it came with a dell dimension 4100). Not sure of the firmware version though. The disk that I used to test in the DVD-ROM, works in my DVD player that is connected to the TV. I'll check the firmware version tonight and test a real DVD as well.
Nero Info Tool will list the firmware version. http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/nero_info_tool.cfm It looks like the latest firmware for your 5700A is version 3.43 so if yours is older there's a chance that updating it may help and certainly couldn't hurt the drives performance. Here's a link: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/nero_info_tool.cfm If you do update the firmware just be sure to take it slow and follow any and all directions exactly since if you don't you can ruin the drive. It's an easy process but needs to be done right _X_X_X_X_X_[small] JMLS-166S/Plextor PX-708A/Plextor Premium My Movies! http://www.intervocative.com/dvdcollection.aspx/Rephaim Got Indie? http://cdbaby.com/[/small]
Cool. Thanks for the information. I will give it a try tonight and post tomorrow with the results. Thanks...
