Hi, i'm not sure what to do about this problem and i know i shouldn't really post again but the situation has kind of changed:

Had a failed windows repair, dvd drive could not copy certain files from the i386 windows install cd, had to cancel and continue and booted up with some installation errors.

Had failed burns, dvd drive would not auto play or run program cd's, dvd's and data disc etc or play cd's.

When i clicked on properties of the drive it would freeze, program not responding etc, when i removed the audio cable it started to work as normal and then after a while stopped again.

Did a full reinstall of windows with the drive in question, went fine, still had problems with drive, changed cables again but this time to an 80 wire cable, set jumpers to cable select, now dvd's and program cd's auto play and load and i can play cd's but it still will not copy the windows files when doing an internet explorer repair and i guess a windows repair.

One other thing, when the windows cd is placed in the drive it won't auto play and does not show the correct symbol for the cd under my computer, it's showing the last program cd that i used in the drive, intel-point etc.

Tried a internet explorer repair but again it could not read the copy the files, tried the windows cd in different dvd drive and it worked perfectly.

So justed wanted to know could there be any chance it's not a faulty dvd drive and perhaps software or mobo related, thanks for your time.

and i apologise for my ignorance about this

First off no need to apologize. ;)

So you tried the disc in another drive on the same computer or another computer all together?

It sounds like a dieing drive or dead already. You are absolutely sure that the OS disc is good? Just making sure as to remove one of the parts of the equation.

I've got a Toshiba HD dvd drive installed as well and the windows cd works perfectly in that, does an internet explorer repair in seconds, as you would expect.

Strange thing is, since changing cables again, but this time to an 80 wire, cd's, dvd's and program discs will auto play and play now, but as soon as i put the windows cd in and look under my computer DVD RAM Drive F the windows symbol isn't there, it's got a intel-point programe symbol instead, the one from my Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse cd.

It will auto play now but it can not do a internet explorer repair, it gives me the same error can't copy file etc as it did when trying a windows repair.

Samsung have finnally issued an RMA, so now it's off to holland for repair or probably replaced with an old refurbished one? I've seen an LG 22x Internal Bulk Bare IDE DVD+/-RW on play.com for £13.99 so i might try one of those.
