Apparently there is a certain firmware version that works... Unfortunately this aint one of em :( Theres 40 bucks gone...

There is a group on another forum trying to get a program/tool to flash the firmwares on these drives so we can use them but Im not holding my breath just dropped another $40 for another drive cept its a 8162B...

Bastad better work! Been tryin to get a drive for a few weeks now!

Has anyone ever ACTUALLY gotten a successful dump with a GDR-8160b? People have mentioned that rawdump recognizes wii discs in this drive, but for one cannot complete the dump using my 8160. It is also not working with friidump. I have tried in a few computers with no luck. I have tried the PIO only trick AND I have tried every version of RawDump that I could get my hands on. I only got this model drive because there are several mentions of this drive working and being the best value. Can someone help, please?

From all these drives, how can I find a drive that will read my Wii original and burn my iso file after I backed up my game? I want a read/write DVD drive. Which is it? Will the GDR-8161B work?

    those drives are ONLY readers
all the ones that uou listed will only read the games and dump them onto ur computer.

u need Another drive that burns dvds(it can be ANY dvd burner)
but u need the specific dvd drives that uou listed or else it wont read the wii /gamecube games.

I had success!!! The drive dumped the wii game disc perfectly and i burnt the game on a disc with nero and using my NEC burner!

No read errors just a smooth burn.

    thanks for all your tips

I have picked up 2 different drives at work. I have used the gdr-8162b and the gdr-8163b. Both of these drives were recognized by rawdump and ripped wii games flawlessly. I see a lot of redundant questions on here. To clear it up. You need a DVD-ROM drive to rip the disc to your hard drive using rawdump or friidump. You have to have one of the DVD-ROM drives made by LG. Once you have an image of the game you ripped, then you can burn it using a DVD burner. So you will need 2 differnt drives to rip and burn a Wii game. It worked for me. Good Luck and have fun.

    ironic calling these questions redundant
when u tell us the drives neeed to be from LG, no that is false they can be any other manufac that uou mentioned.

    anyways
    heres another stupid question
my comp doesnt recognize the dvd-drive
i have an hitachi 8163b. do i need drivers for it? if so where do i get it?

There again, someone mentioned 8160 as being a supported drive. Brewdog23, have you had a success with an 8160? Wiible? Anyone else? I am having a really hard time with it. Could someone who used the 8160 please let me know? Thanks.

All those drive mentioned earlier are made by LG and sold under those other manufacturers names. So yes as of now the Rawdump software only works with LG dvd-rom drives. I am hearing that others are having luck with other Hitachi drives, but I cannot comment on that because I dont own one. Only models gdr-8160 - gdr-8164 are working. I like how people correct a person giving advice when they are having problems themself. As far as your computer not recognizing the drive.... It could be the jumper settings. One drive has to be set to slave and the other has to be set to master and they have to be attached to the appropriate connector on the ide cable. A dvd-rom drive is plug and play and has the needed sofware already on it, so if your computer doesnt recognize it.....you havent installed the drive properly.

So it has to be an actual LG drive? I cannot use an HL? Many of the threads I have read in the past said that LG, HL, and Hitachi will all work because they all use a Hitachi controller. Plus, they are all really made by LG. In fact the one I bought was using a link to an eBay search which I found in a thread on this site. Has anyone had success with an HL?

Firmware can be updated in a matter of minutes if it's available, have you searched? Also post the firmware versions that are confirmed to work if you know them. Thanks.

I have searched high and low, but the only firmware update I could find for the 8160 was a region code hack. I doubt that will help, but maybe I should try...

Does anyone know of where I could find an 8160 firmware update? Otherwise, does anyone have information on how to get a successful dump using an 8160? Wiible? The rumor is that you pulled it off...

If you read the first post, you would see that Wiible had success with the 8160. You could also click his name and PM him. You could also click the 8160 link after his name to see his post.

Are you sure you have a DVD-ROM only? Sure it's an LG or GDR-8160 and not a GCE-8160 or a CRD-8160? Do you have .net Framework 2.0 installed? Is the drive's firmware up to date? What is the exact brand, model and firmware version you have?

It is a GDR. I cannot find any firmware updates. I already sent Wiible a message directly. Thank you.

And the firmware version is? Are you sure the drive even works with regular discs?

I wrote earlier that all the drives rip at about the same speed - slow, which is true, but here's something many of you might find interesting. I have four different models, so I went ahead and tested them all by ripping the exact same disc to the exact same hard drive. Guess what! The older models actually rip slightly faster, even though they are lower DMA speeds:

    Code:
    8162B	Ultra DMA 2	2599MB/hour	32:08
    8161B	Ultra DMA 2	2554MB/hour	32:42
    8163B	Ultra DMA 2	1902MB/hour	43:55
    8164B	Ultra DMA 3	1780MB/hour 46:57
    Enjoy that tip! :)

Pay less, get a faster rip.

I do not know what my firmware revision is. I cannot find a utility to update the firmware so I cannot see what the revision is. Is there another way to find out what the firmware revision is? Do you know something about the firmware for these drives? What should the firmware revision be? The drive revision is A0 (it is printed on top, I am not sure if that is relevant).

Yes, I am able to read other discs (CDs, DVDs, etc) with the drive with no problems.

    Start>Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager>DVD/CD-ROM drives>[double click a drive]>Details

The number after the model number is the firmware version.

There are no numbers after the model number.
