Please help a braindead user--trying to setup a home theater so that all DVD audio and CD audio from a Sony DVD player goes through a Marantz receiver, but video goes direct from the Sony DVD player to the TV. Right now, got component video connections and RCA stereo connections going to the TV...that's fine for the video ,but I want a new surround sound system to go via the Marantz receiver plus any stereo CD audio...The sony DVD has a digital coax that I connected to the receiver==no other connections between DVD player and threceiver. The receiver only supports composite (RCA video and S-video) so I don't want to send any DVD source through it. But I can't seem to switch the audio DVD source to the receiver nor any CD source on the same DVD/CD player... something ain't right but not sure what it is? I tried to tell the receiver to use the digital coax audio but sound still continues to play through the TV's audio, not the receiver's surround sound. Do I have to connect the composite video and audio to the receiver even though I don't want the video to pass through the receiver at all and want the coax digital to be the source for all DVD and CD audio??? Thanks for any help.
Welcome to AD yaz ... the answer to your question i NO, you needn't connect video to the AVR if you don't want to but can you post the makes and models of the equipment you're using? . a) If, by RCA stereo connected going to the TV you mean the red and white RCA, then that is analog audio ... but that is a good thing if you want to be ablt to play audio through your TV without running the Marantz all the time. b) that doesn't make sense, yaz. Please post the make and model of your DVD player and your receiver so I or someone can take a peek. Thanks and welcome once again.
1. The receiver is a Marantz SR5000, which has inputs and outputs for video composite RCA yellow plugs) and S-video, no component video inputs (or outputs) and no DVI or HDMI. It has RCA/analog inputs from external components--cd, dvd, tape--via RCA analog audio inputs and it has 3 external digital audio inputs, one toslink/optical audio and two digital coax. 2. The DVD/CD player is a Sony DVP-NS425P, which has a component out set of video outputs, a set of RCA analog video and audio outputs and one digital audio coax (the digital coax is the only component connection to the receiver right now, the component and composite are both connected directly to my TV). I selected the DVD/CD player's progressive option to prefer the component video over the analog. On the receiver, I've tried choosing both CD and DVD components as the source and selected the first digital coax for the audio. But audio is still being piped to the TV's own speakers, nothing through my surround sound setup. Thanks for your help
I'm not a pro but let me at least look at your stuff and see if I can figure it out as I'm sure others will but lots of people are gone over the holiday so be patient for responses if I can't figure it out.
I was finally able to get the sound to play through the reeiver by connecting the audio RCA analog plugs to the receiver and then selecting on the receiver the digital coax input. NOt sure why that was necessary but until I did, nothing would work.
