I have been backing up movies just fine, and just the other day I put a dvd in to back up and my dvd burner would not recognize that I had a dvd in it. The dvd plays just fine in a dvd player on my tv. I opened up dvd decrypter and had it do a scan and it could see that there was info on the dvd but could not pull anything off of it. Please help I have no idea what the problem is. By the way I think the dvd I am trying to back up is a copied version, I bought it off of e-bay and it came from Israel.

First off you should be able to tell if it's a copy or an original.

Second, try giving the disc a real good cleaning. Clean your laser lens also.

Third, try using an up to date program like DVDFab HD Decrypter.

And last, your device may not like the kind of media that the movie is on. Try it in another computer.

Thanks I will try dvdfab. As for whether or not it is a copy, it has a label on it that looks identical to the original. I am backing up some workout discs for my wife it came in a set of 3 and two of them will not read in my dvd burner.

Any logs that can provide information about your system and drive could be helpful.

I'm using a dell optiplex 160L 2 gig ram 40 gig hdd windows 2000sp4 and for the dvd writer I am using a sony dru-190A. Andwhen I open dvd decryptor it says disk is bland but when I choose the option for iso write it says disc not empty and option for iso read it say disc empty. Even when I am playing around with some of the nero options it can tell that the disc has info on it. When I go to my computer and click on the disc drive it says please insert disc. I am very baffled as to why this is happening. Is there a way to put a code in a dvd disc that will make a dvd burner not recognize it. I currently have another computer taken apart so I can't tell if the disc will play in another computer. Thanks for you time and input. By the way dvdfab didn't pick it up either.

Is your firmware up to date?
    What is the disc's mid?
    We need that info.
Try the disc on another pc to see if the problem is still there.
Try another disc in your pc. If everything reads okay, you most likely have a bad disc whether is burned or pressed.

You got a bad copy or at least it seems that way. Is the only disc you're having problems with?
Have you tried the disc on another computer?

No I haven't tried it in another computer yet. My other comp that has a dvd drive is taken apart at the moment. So I can have a bad copy and still have it play fine in a standard dvd player? Thanks for your time and input.

They were most likely burned incorrectly. Yes they are copies. Your DVD drive is more picky about what you put into it than your standalone player. Take them to a friend's house and try them.
