Anybody know the best way to get labels off of DVDs? I am having errors and I relaized it was only with the ones that have labels on them. i stopped using labels, but want to remove them, if possible, without ruining the dvd.
I backed up lots of my DVD's and played them immediately to verify their integrity, then I put labels on them and thought nothing more about for over a year. Until I started playing my backups several weeks ago. What a mess. Nearly 90 percent were no good due to pixeling and it confirmed that putting labels on them is a BAD IDEA. The answer was simple, if not slightly time consuming. I use 2 salad plates, paper towels, water and something I bought at "Home Depot" called "ZEP" a carpet cleaner, but probably any such cleaner would do. I take 1 paper towel and fold it in half and then half again so I have a square and soak it in warm water. Then make a few very small sprays of ZEP on it while it is laying on the first saucer. Put the DVD, label side down on the plate and let it sit for 4 or 5 minutes. Put another dry folded paper towel on plate # 2 and lay the DVD on it, label side up and proceed to rub off the label. Depending on the glue used by the label, it might require a second soaking on the label side (1st plate). Then just rub off the remaining paper and glue and clean entire DVD with another damp paper towel. If you have a lot of DVD's that have labels, this might be something you do when you have a couple hours to kill and once you get on a roll it goes pretty fast. The best way to store DVD's is in the "slim cases". They are cheap. labdummy
ye better pray that ZEP do not start pealing the top layer off ye dvd.. at least if i remember ZEP smells nice.. cheers
Valid concern !, However if during the process the data side is never face down during the soaking and removal process then this should not be a problem, Plate 2 is merely a DRY (not moistened) paper towel to provide a clean non-contaminating surface to lay the data side on while removing the label.
