Howdy, I just mail ordered my first recorder, a new LiteOn LVW-5005.

Which blank DVD discs should I buy in advance in order to have media on hand to test the machine when it arrives?

I guess I should have either R or -R, and RW or -RW DVD discs, er ah which brand and spec would likely be my best choice to start out with?

    Thanks.

If you live by a Best Buy,Verbatim,Sony made in Japan,Fuji MIJ,all go on sale from time to time for $.30 a disc or lower. Just stay away from cmcmags, prodisc. Download dvd identifier to see who "really" make your discs.Made in Japan is a good bet you will get good blanks. Good Luck

budberner's advice is excellent .. for a PC burner

However ... my experience with both of my 5005 recorders has been that made in Taiwan Sony discs, Verbatim discs and Ritek-made Office Depot & Maxell (made in Taiwan also)are the best ... Also, the LiteOn seems to prefer the +R format to the -R format

If you're gonna use RW discs ... by far and away the best are the Verbatim +RW .. none of the other RW discs hold up very well and I wouldn't waste my time and money on 'em

excellent choice of a DVD recorder .. hopefully it's a 5005 as opposed to a 5005X ... good luck and happy burning

When you receive the machine, repost and I'll pass along some tips I've picked up in the last year and a half ...

    Thanks all for the advice.

Yes, its the 5005 with no X.

Based on adivce here, I picked up Verbatim +R and a few Verbatim +RW. Both are 4x speed, not 16 to have on hand for trial when player arrives.

I would be interested in any further advice on the LiteOn which will be my first DVD recorder. Our old player (which always has and still does work perfectly) is an Apex 1500 which automatically recognizes and plays PAL movie DVD's all regions perfectly here in America, along with normal NTSC no problems. We just drop in any format DVD and it starts playing in the Apex without needing to change any settings in the menus.

    Thanks again!
