Hey guys I'm new to this site and DVD burning. Think I'm gonna haveto replace my dvd player, for some reason it won't play DVD-R or DVD+R that I have so far burnt. I have DVD-R movies that someone else did for me, these work fine but the DVD's I have done with Decrypter and Shrink do not play. Doesn't seem to matter what format I use. My DVD player is a Panasonic DVD-RV31 which is a few years old, could this be the problem? Funny though, I have successfully played these DVD's on my brother's newer Panasonic DVD player. Anyway, I'm interested in your thoughts. Cheers.
Hi monaro57, Do yourself it great big favor and read that second link in my signature You will find that it is the brand of DVD media used that can make the most difference. There is also a link there that will let you know which brand and type of DVD will be most compatable with your DVD Player. Or just use the same brand name that "someone else" did for you because you know those play. Also check out the "Book Typing" section in that link.. Cheers
What is your actual burner model brand name and #? What is your Buddies burner model brand name and #? What is the brand name/format/and the speed rating of that media you and your buddy are using? What speed were these backup copies burned? How do your own backups look while you view them on your pc,using the rw drive that burned them? Try to view them, like the beginning, fast forward, skip chapters, and check to see how the end of the backups are. 0This is a typical compatability issue.Burners are just like stand alone players, they are all different. Many variations between lasers. There are many fixes to this, but last resort is either a new player or new quality burner. The cheapo players usually play anything.A cheap burner can cause you many problems, mainly compatability on stand alone players. Using quality media and a 4x burn speed max often helps. It's the first thing to rule out. If your player plays someones elses backups, then it should be able to play your backups. There are some players out there that will play anything you slap in them,a certain format,or absolutely no backups at all.At least yours is playing someone else's backups.Let check on your media quality first and burner model #'s..
My burner is a Samsung TS-H552U 12X DL The media I used was 8x Imation DVD+R and also 8x Verbitam DVD-R. The burn speed was 8x by memory, definately no faster. The DVDs I made work perfectly on the other DVD players in the house and play fine on the computer, just not my Panasonic DVD RV-31. I'll try have a look for this media compatibility list. Cheers
Imation dvd's (shudders).. it might be worth checking you have the latest firmware on that burner too.. - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2011
8x burn speed on those imations in the plus format, bump it down to 4x and try another backup at 2.4x and see if that rv31 will play it. Those verbs should be very good, but try to bump that burn speed down to 4x and give a try. I don't hear much about samsung burners so I don't know it has the booktyping capability. If that player can't play those backups with the slower burn speed, then try some quality plus discs. If the quality plus format/slow burn speed fails, then try: Have whoever made those playable backups to re-rip one of your backups. If they successfully re-rip it and your rv-31 plays it ok,then it will be a lot more difficult to fix.Usually a player or burner replacement,if you desire the compatability. If they can't re-rip it,then probably many errors which would lead to maybe hardware/software problem. There are many, many numerous possibilities when it comes to playback issues.Just search these forums on playback issues and you'll see, LOL I know where you are coming from, you want to be able to play your backups in your stand alones, and even your family's players. I play my backups on a lot of them-30+,so compatability is critical. That's where the booktyping dvd plus format to dvd-rom comes in handy.Even the quality of burners show up when you play those backups in many stand alones/ps2's/and pc drives like I do, But that is a last resort. PS, I'm still curious on what model of burner your buddy has,if you have that info.
I recommend that you check out Supermedia.com or Rima.com and check out the Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim blank DVD media in whatever choice you need. These are the best two brands if you ask me and these two stores are respectable. Yeah I agree with bbmayo, media controls the big deciding factor on how good the dvd plays in your player but yet you still need to make sure you dvd player plays your -r's and +r's.
I'm with saugmon. If you want your backups to be the most compatable possible with stand-alone dvd players then I would booktype your backups dvd-rom. I don't think samsung's are capable of doing this. Both saugmon and I have and like our benq dw1620's which are capable of booktyping +r/rw media dvd-rom. You could replace your panasonic dvd player for about the same price you can replace your dvd burner but you will never know about compatability issues with future or other dvd players. There are some here that are not convinced of bitsetting benefits but I for one am a believer. I'm yet to find a stand-alone player that won't play my dvd+r booktyped dvd-rom backups. Always use good, proven, high quality, media and limit burn speeds to 4x, 8x at most only on 16x rated media. Mort
Hi creaky what does this firmware do? Also when you guys refer to 'booktyping' is this a burning format or something? I'll try burning at 4x with verbatim and maybe also experiment with different media. See how it goes.
Monaro57: I just checked another web site, where there is a data base of DVD players based on user's reports. According to the info there, your DVD player can handle quality DVD-Rs, DVD+Rs, DVD-RWs, and DVD+RWs. But, I did notice quite a few posts from people who noted their player (the same model as yours) had choked on the lesser quality, garbage, lousy media. Here is a snippet from what one of the 157 users reported about the RV-31: "The last problem that I found was with Imation 8x media. I have an HP200i (2.4x record speed) recorder and record at 2.4x speed. I updated the firmware to support the 4x media but have not updated lately. One in four disks recorded take many tries to load. If I put one in that does load every time, then a problem disk will load every time. I just bought two stacks of 25 disk ($8 each at Target). These will be my last 8x I ever purchase for this player." I would strongly urge you to try some high quality media -- Taiyo Yudens, or perhaps the Ritek Go4s or even the GO5s. You can purchase these on-line from: -Supermediatore.com -Meritline -Rima -NewEgg I have had friends who had miserable, awful experiences with the Imation DVD stuff. One of whom bought 100 (he purchased his at an OfficeMax), back when this meant an $83.00 investment. He had 7 successes out of the first 50 or so, and then he ended up just throwing the rest in the trash. Do a bit of research, purchase quality, and you will spend much less in the long run. This is true of almost everything, but it is MORESO true when it comes to DVD blank media, since there is more "junk" out there on the shelves than there is "quality." This is sad, but true. If you want to read other users' reports about your DVD player, to help you buy wisely, here is a link: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers.php?DVDnameid=241&Search=Search&#comments -Bruce
@monaro57 - firmware is what teaches you burner about media/newer media/burn speeds, so if it's out of date for instance it won't recognise brand new modern media correctly/if at all. as to what's in a particular firmware update, most manufacturer's don't give info as to what they're updating. some burners, ie Lite-on for example, have utilities that can report on the contents of the firmware, ie all the manufacturers codes, burn speeds etc..
