Okay, I am having issues with this whole burning DVDs process. On my old computer I had Nero 7 and DVD Shrink installed and the DVDs I would copy and burn would work perfectly in all my home DVD players. Now I have a new computer (HP Pavilion dv2000) with Windows Vista. I have Nero 8 trial version and DVD Shrink installed. I have burned a couple of DVDs and they will only play on my computer DVD player, not in any of my home DVD players. I can't figure out what to do. Please help!!!
In addition to David's questions, add another: at what speed are you burning? If you're burning with Nero, save a log and post the log section back to this thread omitting your name and serial number. If you got a new system, including burner, you may be burning at max speed. Limit your burn speed to half the rated speed of the media. In Vista the log is stored in this path: Desktop/Your Comp Name/App Data/Roaming/Ahead/NeroHistory Edit: text added below You might also try burning with ImgBurn (free): http://www.imgburn.com
Hi, you might try DVD Identifier (free I think) to id the maker of the memorex discs, but usually they are of poor quality. Best to use Taiyo Yudens (made in Japan or Verbatim discs, and use the dvd+r type with the burning program eg. Imgburn booktyped to DVD-ROM).This will give best results. Poor quality media usually leads to agrivation and grief. Also the burner in your new computer is of poor quality. BTW it is said that Vista has a lot of DRM issues and may not be comatible/hospitible with copying or backing up programs. Xp is nice and plays well with others.

You never did say at what speed you were burning. I suspect you're likely burning too fast using lower quality Memorex branded media. Try slowing down to 4X burning and try some decent media. Verbatim is usually the easiest to find for most.
Ritek, Ricoh, CMC, and Prodisc are poor quality? When was the last time you calibrated your Pulstec drive?
Okay, I now have DVD Shrink and ImgBurn. What should I do to make sure that the DVDs I burn will work in my home players (Emerson and Sanyo)?
Based on your first message, the Memorex discs worked fine in your old computer, so let's avoid the knee-jerk reaction to blame the discs. Your recording drive, operating system, and recording software all changed; and now the discs don't play on the Emerson and Sanyo DVD players. That suggests that the problem lies in the changes, not necessarily the discs. The most likely source of the problem is the recording drive, and the new Nero 8 software would be second. 1) Try recording the same discs on the HP with ImgBurn and DVD Shrink. If the same problem occurs, that suggests that your recording drive is the cause (because the problem remains when the recording software changes.) Laptop drives are generally more finicky than half-height drives used in desktop computers. If your older computer is a desktop whose drive can be removed, I'd suggest getting an external USB enclosure and installing the old drive in it to use with the new laptop. 2) Try a different brand of discs on the HP laptop computer and the new software. If those recorded media do play on the Emerson and Sanyo DVD players, switch to that brand. That brand would be more compatible with your HP drive. 3) A third alternative would be to buy an external drive for your laptop that is less restrictive in the choice of media. Plextor, Lite-On, BenQ, Pioneer, and LG all make good drives. I have not used any Optiarc drives, but I see a lot of complaints about them in numerous posts; and I don't know what the real problem with them is.
