It has taken about 2 hours to copy a dvd and now that it's copied, it will not play on any of my dvd players. should it take that long and why will they not play?

try ckecking over at www.videohelp.com and check the brand and model of your dvd player and if they play with the brand or type of dvd r your burning to.

Depending on your system specs (especially much older ones), burn speed, file size of movie, choosing a deep analysis, etc - yes it could.
More info is needed but here are some thoughts.
You should make sure your drive is set to DMA instead of PIO. PIO mode would definitely slow things down. Check out this guide: http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/petesguide1.html
Make sure your drives firmware is update.
My guess is the reason your standalone won't play the DVD is due to the media you used. What media did you use?
