I have a samsung home cinema system which plays the lot. I have made up DVD disks with both divx and mpeg films on it and it just plays away. Can't remember the model number, but i know it can also be made region free (just havn't got round to it yet).

When you say best, what price range? The best players, i.e. Mark Levinson No. 51, Faroudja, LINN, Camelot Tech., Marantz, Sony, etc. cost from $2500 to over $10,000! Is this what you are looking for or just a good quality universal player? BOB

i have an LG LDA-511 and it plays everything i throw at it.

got it from best buy, was originally 200 bucks at first, paid 170 when on sale, then now has a clearance price of about 130 bucks now..
there is also the LG LDVB-418, but that one had audio sync problems, so i returned it for the 511.

this is a quote from the link that my buddy catfreak linked you too, it tells what it does and does not do, i will copy and paste for you here, but will add, that the LG LDA-511 (the one i have) does play all you ask and then some.... but here it is, quite lengthy...

When u buy a sony dvd-player, they ask if you want a chip that allows you to play any disk....but it does cost about $50-$75...depends on the model...same with dem pioneer ones...dunno bot the rest.

For about $60, you can go to BestBuy and buy the Philips DVP642 .. it plays everything without a ripoff $50 chip!

I just bought the lite-on stand alone dvd recorder from circuit city for $74. Burns to DVD+R/RW and it says on the box that it plays mpeg 4 (which is divx, right?). It also has a firewire input for recording from your dv cam. I haven't opened it yet but will comment once I use it. Black friday rules.

    Hey all...good day to you.

I've been trying to find out if my new dirt cheap DVD player will play DivX or Xvid movies. Unfortunately, can't find it on any of the forums here. It's a Diamond and bought @ Walmart (Canada) almost 3 months ago. Got a few Xvid movies in my hardrive and planning to burn them onto DVD discs. Found this site on how to convert them to DVD-R's but wasn't succesful in the conversion process. Also, I'm looking for the author who wrote this guide and article about "How to Convert DivX to DVDR with DVD2SVCD" and here's the link: http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/divx_to_dvdr_with_dvd2svcd_normal.cfm
He indicated that he could be pm'ed.

Someone please help. I've encountered some problems and am stuck. I apologize if I've placed this question in the wrong section of this forum.
