I have been using Verbatim DVD-R's with DVDFAB and CloneDVD2. My question is at what percent should I burn and not burn at. I would like to get double layer, but those cost two to three times more than single layer. Can you really notice a diffrence between original DVD copy and a DVD burned at 60% quality? I'm just doing main movie and menu only with one soundtrack. Is there a program I'm missing that can help the picture quality? Thanks for your input.
There's a few different routes one could use for good quality backups. Burning to a DL disc is one. Ripping main movie usually cuts down on compression. Removing unwanteds like different languages and subtitles also helps. Then there's Dvd Rebuilder which renders great quality as well.

The best advice has been given to you by 7thsinger for using single layer discs. Otherwise to maintain maximum picture quality, you need to use dual layer discs and an upconverting dvd player as Oppo.
with a 31" CRT NO you won't notice a difference. with a 60" Sony SXRD, LCD etc.YES you will notice a difference you best bet is to save you're money and use DVD Rebuilder to encode with if you're at 70% or more compression assuming you're playing the movie back on a large set if you aren't don't bother
No reason "to save your money". The free version wirh HCenc encoder provides excellent results especially at lower bitrates.
MysticE , i meant buying DVD-R SL media at 25 cents and using DVD Rebuilder compared to paying 1.75 each for using DVD+R DL media
there are alot of movies that are comeing out right now that dont even need any compression. i just did today. Jumper and spiderwick chronicals neither one of them needed any compression. kinda disappointed i didnt get to use dvd-rebuilder....lol normally any movie under 90 mins long you wont even have any compression to get it done. as 7thsinger stated if you do movie and menu only without the subtitles and extra languages there will be next to nothing on compresion either. and as aabbccdd(opps) said 70%(meaning 30% is being compressed) is about the standard for going with DL disc or useing something like dvd-rebuilder or dvd-shrink
