hi, this is a simple DVD question. how many hours of movie/video time can a single layer DVD contain? what's its capacity in terms of movie/video time?
Not so simple, normally a single layer DVD disk is a 120 minutes long, but with compression of video you can lengthen the playing time. My Panasonic DVD Recorder will compress video up to 8 hours on a single layer disk. You can also by using Shrink and setting your target size lower or running it through Shrink multiple times, possibly get the same amount of time or more. Of course your quality would be horrible. The amount of compression is the key to the amount of time used.
@razorstab, It can holds as much as 2 or 3 movies, but that needs to do a lot of compressing job and you won't be too happy with the quality in result. Honestly, the most I'd ever did was to encode/compress an 3 hr long movie such as "LOTR" (main movie only) to fit in the blank DVD+R that's basically. Other than that, I wouldn't recommend put in too much stuff into one single layer dvd due to the lost of picture quality.
arniebear & alkohol thanks for the info. alkohol, may i know what application you used to compress videos? i don't know if it's ok, coz i have sub questions. do you guys know if there is an application that will simply burn avi to DVD directly without needing to convert them to DVD video format? like you just select the video files then click burn, then done after a few minutes; you don't need to trouble yourself with conversion and such stuffs.. another sub question: regarding video quality.. how do you know if you're getting xvid or divx avi files? like if i downloaded some tv-ripped episodes then i wanna burn them into DVD; like what application do i use to encode them and encode into what type of video format or quality (high/low)? really need some advices and details.. sorry, for having many questions. just trying to learn something new. also let me know where to post if i posted these sub questions in the wrong section.
