I was trying to burn a data DVD-R on my parents computer and I always get that Illegal error just before it starts burning on my disc, with Nero 6.3.0.2 (I had a newer version but I put the same one that I have on my computer so I thought It would be fine for burning Dvd-R like On Mine) I updated The Firmware to 1.0b (Same Problem) I can burn CD-R and CD-RW Though I haven't tried lately but I could Burn Music Videos DVD-R With Nero Vision without any problems. It's the first time I try burning a DVD-R on nero with this Burner and just can't. (I use some Memorex from Wal-mart (Sorry for not knowing what kind , I just put away the casing with the description but I always use these discs)) I think the kind of disc used would be in the log. Here's the log description: Windows XP 5.1 IA32 WinAspi: - ahead WinASPI: File 'C:\PROGRA~1\Ahead\Nero\Wnaspi32.dll': Ver=2.0.1.59, size=160016 bytes, created 12/16/2003 7:18:06 PM Nero version: 6.3.0.2 Recorder: <_NEC DVD_RW ND-1300A> Version: 1.0B - HA 1 TA 0 - 6.3.0.2 Adapter driver: <atapi> HA 1 Drive buffer : 2048kB Bus Type : default (0) -> ATAPI, detected: ATAPI CD-ROM: <_NEC DVD_RW ND-1300A >Version: 1.0B - HA 1 TA 0 - 6.3.0.2 Adapter driver: <atapi> HA 1 === Scsi-Device-Map === DiskPeripheral : Maxtor 6Y080L0 atapi Port 0 ID 0 DMA: On CdRomPeripheral : _NEC DVD_RW ND-1300A atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: On === CDRom-Device-Map === _NEC DVD_RW ND-1300A E: CDRom0 ======================= AutoRun : 1 Excluded drive IDs: CmdQueuing : 1 CmdNotification: 2 WriteBufferSize: 74448896 (0) Byte ShowDrvBufStat : 0 EraseSpeed : 0 BUFE : 0 Physical memory : 511MB (523760kB) Free physical memory: 178MB (183084kB) Memory in use : 65 % Uncached PFiles: 0x0 Use Static Write Speed Table: 0 Use Inquiry : 1 Global Bus Type: default (0) Check supported media : Disabled (0) 10.9.2008 ISO compilation 12:38:12 PM #1 Text 0 File Isodoc.cpp, Line 6029 Iso document burn settings ------------------------------------------ Determine maximum speed : FALSE Simulate : FALSE Write : TRUE Finalize CD : TRUE Multisession : FALSE Burning mode : DAO Mode : 1 ISO Level : 1 (Max. of 11 = 8 + 3 char) Character set : ISO 9660 Joliet : TRUE Allow pathdepth more than 8 directories : TRUE Allow more than 255 characters in path : TRUE Write ISO9660 ;1 file extensions : TRUE 12:38:12 PM #2 Text 0 File Reader.cpp, Line 118 Reader running 12:38:12 PM #3 ISO9660GEN -11 File geniso.cpp, Line 3882 First writeable address = 0 (0x00000000) 12:38:12 PM #4 Text 0 File Burncd.cpp, Line 3101 Turn on Disc-at-once, using DVD media 12:38:12 PM #5 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 240 Last possible write address on media: 2298495 (510:46.45, 4489MB) Last address to be written: 2179519 (484:20.19, 4256MB) 12:38:12 PM #6 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 245 Write in overburning mode: FALSE 12:38:12 PM #7 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 2085 Recorder: _NEC DVD_RW ND-1300A, Media type: DVD-R Disc Manufacturer: CMC MA - G. 2 comments.. That burner is an antique.. I doubt very much it will burn 16x disks. You may get some joy with this firmware so long as you stick to 4x as an absolute maximum write speed... Those cmc disks belong in the bin.. not in your burner
Update your Nero to version 6.6.1.15a Here's how: Before udating to 6.6.1.15a save the serial #, uninstall Nero, then use the cleaning tools : http://www.nero.com/eng/support-nero6-tools-utilities.html then do a registry clean up(free registry cleaner, CClean: http://www.ccleaner.com/download/downloadpage.aspx?1) and defrag...... then reboot! update to Nero 6.6.1.15a, install Package 1 and Package 2 only: http://www.nero.com/eng/downloads-nero6-update.php reboot and you're good to go! also I would use better media. Stick with the MIJ rule (Made In Japan). Look for the MIJ on the label of the box of spindle (Taiyo Yuden, Sony, Maxell, and some Fuji)... the only exception to this rule is Verbatim, which is top notch media but made in Taiwan/Singapore and the only non MIJs I will use. you are definitely on an old machine with an old burner! And your at the minimum 512MB RAM and yet you have too many programs running at the same time that you're trying to burn a DVD! No multi tasking, no internet, shut off all unnecessary programs working in the background, and even shut down your anti virus programs while burning so you can free up your RAM that you do have.... or upgrade to at least 1Gb of RAM. this comes from Roxio/Sonic programs that interferes with Nero! Uninstall Roxio/Sonic programs and use a registry cleaner, defrag and reboot then try again! if you are trying to burn at 2.4x then you must be trying to burn to an RW disk! Those CMC MAGs are garbage and cause trouble most of the time....... use better media as stated above!
Thanks for the help! Since I just have dial-up Internet (Can't get high speed at place) I'm actually loading Nero Package 2 , Package 1 is already loaded. I followed the steps to uninstall Nero . and cleaned it completely for the exception of the registration key. I know this PC and Burner is old but it's not mine If my disc are 16x , where do you see this in the log? I installed Alcohol previously but I uninstall it , could it be the program using that driver , if not , which one could it be? If that nero update don't fix that my problem , i'll keep thos DVD for my pc and buy some new ones (4X (MIJ) this time) for this computer. I never really checked the burning speed and that on packages because they always did the job on my PC but this one here is limited! Next time, I'll burn at 4X (I tried all the speed available for this disc cause I never burn at 2.4 except for experimentation ) and i'll try to close all the programs taking memory even though there is just (Spybot - Symantec Anti Corporate (Should be nod32 like on mine) - Windows Drfender (I Will Uninstall cause it's no use for me) These DVD are crap I know and I'll find a way to use them or put them away. Thanks for your help again! I'll keep you informed of if it worked!
here is a media guide for you: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm it's not without it's faults but it's a good indication of what's good out there. TDK is the only one that I disagree with..... it's second rate at best! for your machine... since it's old.... you need to buy 8x media! If you can then buy 4x but I doubt you'll find any! Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim! Make sure the disks are NOT MADE IN INDIA!
