    Hi Everyone,

Today I suffered 2 - DVD+R DL burn failures , on my WinXP Pro SP3 computer. I was attempted to burn with both DVDFabPlatinum 5.1.1.0 and Nero 7 burning ROM. I was trying to write DVD files.
I tried with 2-separate DVD titles , that I had on my hard drive. Both DVD movies play back fine on my computer. I just can't get either one on a disk.
I'm using my SONY DVD RW DRU-720A external USB 2.0 burner. The drive works fine with 4.7 GB. DVDs . For the DVD 8.5 GB disks, I'm using Sony DVD+R DL disks .
The burn failure I had with DVDFab Platinum 5.1.1.0 , had a sudden "device unaccessible" error while the burn was working.
And I used DVDFab Platinum 5.1.1.0 to reset my DMA, but that didn't help.
With Nero 7 burning ROM , I first had a successful burn with a DVD 4.7 disk, but when I tried burning a 6.45 GB DVD folder , to a Sony DVD+R DL disk , it failed. I selected my recorder to the "physical disk type" for book type , and to "write extended lead out to dual layer disks" in Nero recorder settings. All started out well, but then I got some sort of "address error" and Nero said burn failure .
I'm attaching my Nero log with this post.
I've had my SONY DVD RW DRU-720A drive for about 1-1/2 years, and this is only the 2nd time I've burned to DVD+R DL disks.
The previous time worked , but I used Verbatim disks, not Sony disks. I thought Sony disks would work well with a Sony burner ?
Could someone look over my Nero log file, and give me some feedback on what the problem may be ? This very frustrating , and these dual layer disks are expensive !
    Thanks .

Nero seems to be identifying your recorder, so I'm not sure firmware update will solve...
I found Nero would not write to Ritek core discs in Dual Layer... Neither Data of Video...
I had some success burning video with Sony DVD Architect or using DVD Shrink (Ironically) with the Deep option enabled...

    R.G. ,

After updating my firmware , I still had the same problem . You were right about that. The success's that you had, did you burn with Nero,
via the DVD Shrink option ?

Try ImgBurn for burning DL. Better than Nero, it's free.

Yes, DVD Shrink was using Nero Engine...
Even the Sony DVD Architect was not Perfect tho... had to coaster it 'coz it didn't play on target player... Prison Break eps for a neighbour... Had to Shrink it to 4.38 in the end...
A lot of people recommend IMGBurn as well as our esteemed Cyprusrom, so I would only suggest the same if DL is needed...
I just work without for now, as the tech seems to be weak as yet...

DVD Architect doesn't use Nero engine, tho...
    Missed that, there...
Nero was Burning discs, just insufficient portability for target medium...
DVD Shrink gave higher portability, but still failed on target...
DVD Architect passed all tests here, but failed on target...
Had to Shrink and Burn Single Layer (With Nero)
Nero has served me well, and as it gives me more control and options for disc properties, it tends to be first choice...

I have never burned a true success on Dual Layer...

If you burn with Nero from DVD Shrink, or directly with Nero, you use the same burning engine, so it shouldn't make any difference.
For DL I'd use Verbatim discs and ImgBurn. And of course, have the firmware updated for your burner.

That is a medium error, your burner(firmware) and the discs you are using don't get along.

I'm not sure if you mean DL discs or the programs to burn them as being weak. Price not performance is the reason people dont like DL discs, and I dont know of an easier, free program for perfect burns every time than IMGBurn.
99% of the time a DL burn doesnt work its the operators error of some sort. Either not setting up the files to burn properly and treating them as you would a single layer disc, not using the a burning program right, or using the cheapest of the cheap DL discs.
    Follow CyprusRom on this.

EDIT=CyprusRom posted while I was typing and echoed my statements but pointed out facts instead of my generalities...

Between experience and what I've read here since joining the forum, I suspect it may be 'coz my recorders are too old...
Still haven't tried IMGBurn, but will along the way... I think some new drives should come first, and some decent discs...
the market was a bit limited here at the time, but now I have more options...
    Thanx, guys...

I totally understand your sentiments R.G.Findlay what works for some doesnt always work for others. I wasnt trying to have a rude tone, sorry if it sounded like that, and if you have questions about updating the things you mentioned and your other options dont hesitste to start a thread!

Recently, I found out the hard-way , that there are 2-different kinds of Verbatim DL disc's . Check out this thread from the IMGBurn support forum.......

    http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=8000

That lesson cost me about $19.00 !

Also, I recently purchased some Maxell single layer D+R disc's' from Walmart that burn disc's with errors on them such as the movie freezing up .
However, some Maxell single layer D+R disc's' that I purchased from Walgreen's work OK . Nero CD/DVD Speed test's "Disk Info" tells me that there isn't any difference between the two sets of disc's .
But the disk Color is different between the two sets of disc's !
I think from now on I'm just going to purchase the right kind of Verbatim disc's on-line . It seems to me that the quality of blank DVD medium is going down . I can't get by with cheap Maxell disc's anymore .

I don't use any DL( I find them to be a waste of space and money). The single layer Verbatims I usually buy them at Office Max when they go on sale, 50pack for $12 or so.
I have used Maxell in the past, X8, MAXELL-002-00 and RITEK-R03-02. I've had no problems with either. What do your discs ID as? Might be made by CMC.Mag.
