Hello folks, I'm a newbie here; however I've had a bit of a go at the various DVD ripping tools, but mainly I’ve had a lot of dealings with DVD Shrink. I think it’s an awesome tool, and in a way I wish I could donate to the authors, they most certainly deserve the accolades. So if anyone knows where or how I could pay my thanks, please do let me know. Oh, and lastly, I first stumbled onto DVD Shrink at this very awesome site, heh, afterdawn.com you folks are wicked cool! Anyways, back to the reason why I'm posting this message, well I want to ask if anyone in here has successfully burned a DVD9 (dual layered) disk to the new media DVD+R DL (double/dual layer) disks? I know that the pricing on the DVD+R DL disks themselves are very, very dear. But that didn’t stop me from trying. I downloaded the latest firmware at the time for my DVD burner so that it is compatible with the new DVD+R DL disks. And let me just say that it works absolutely wonderfully! I’ve managed to successfully burn a DVD movie without compressions whatsoever onto the new DVD+R DL disks. Thanks to DVD Shrink 3.2 and the latest firmware for my DVD burner. ============================================================================================== [bold]Please Scroll down to my second post for more detail on how to burn DVD+R DL with the LiteOn SOHW-812S Models.[/bold] ==============================================================================================
Congratulations on your success and thank you for the kind words about our wonderful site With more and more people needing information about DL burning and your first hand experience we'd welcome your help and input if you're so inclined.
Iam a think i no it all kind of guy and have no experience with this type of media yet.But until the price is right i will not bother even though iam ready to go.In the uk i have not seen any DL media on general sale and on the net the price of 1 DL disc is the same as 25 SL disc.So people like yourself are really good source of info on this media so please keep us posted. Much appreciated John179
Nephilin, oh, I’d be glad to help out where I can. I mean, after rall this is the very site where I obtained a lot of help for using the various applications and troubleshoots. And John179 I’ll keep you folks posted on anything new. [bold]Burning DVD+R DL with SOHW-812S DVD+RW Burners[/bold] For starters, my DVD burner is the LiteOn SOHW-812S. Manufactured April of this year. So having had first hand experience on just this model, I cannot provide adequate help on other makes and models of DVD burners; therefore I am sympathetic to those seeking the specific firmware for their particular models of burners. I do apologize on that front for the matters in regards to that. I also have DVD Shrink version 3.2 (which now supports Dual Layer burning via Nero) and DVD43 which can all be found on this great site. You’ll also need Nero 6.3.1.17 that has support for Dual layer burning, DVD Shrink 3.2 takes use of that so be sure to set it in the preferences setting by clicking on the ‘edit’ tab and scrolling down to the ‘preferences…’ label on the pull down menu. And under ‘Target DVD size: compress output files to the size you specify here’ you’ll find the option to choose, so click on that options menu and choose DVD-9 (8.5GB). The latest firmware update from Liteon.com is the US0Q for the above model only; make sure to download this file first, as it’ll serve as a fail safe device which you can revert your DVD drive back to normal if the unofficial firmware does not work on your DVD burner, or if you’ve selected the wrong settings. So please do keep that in mind. Download the firmware US0Q first. Download from this link http://www.liteonit.com.tw/ODD/WebFW/SOHW-812S/DR8US0Q.zip Next you should head on to this great site http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares.html and I should extend my appreciation and my many, many thanks to the folks at codeguys for their excellent, excellent work! Please make sure to read the welcoming message at the top of the page to get a better understanding on firmware. Now, once there download the [bold]omnipatcher[/bold] tool from the page there amongst the firmware or head to this link http://codeguys.rpc1.org/patchers.html downloading the file ‘[bold]Version 1.3.8 (changelog)[/bold]’ and the updated download file ‘[bold]Latest "Recommended Tweaks" File[/bold]’ now, inside that updated download file contains a file named ‘rec_tweak’ be sure to put that file into the same directory you extracted omnipatcher into, overwriting the old. You’ll now need to download the appropriate firmware that enables DVD+R DL burning on the LiteOn Model SHOW-812S thus tricking it to become more or less alike the more recently released models that burn Double layers, like model SHOW-832S. So download the firmware ‘VS0A – Stock – Unscrambled’ under the model name [bold]LiteOn SOHW-832S[/bold] or click on the following link http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares/stock/832S.VS0A.stock.rar to hasten things up. For ease of use download this file and then extract it to the same directory Omnipatcher is located to. For ease and convenience, set up an Omnipatcher Directory and put everything in there that has been covered here, the Omnipatcher application and the extracted firmware. Go to the directory which you’ve extracted Omnipatcher to and double click on the 'dvdrw_omnipatcher.exe' file. The program should run and display nothing, because no files are loaded yet. Under ‘No File Loaded’ click on load and look out for the firmware file ‘832S.VS0A.stock’ double click on that and you should have that sub screen full of all sorts of things. They are there for you to choose the appropriate compatibility modes with the plethora of DVD+/-R Medias out there, like; DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW or DVD+R DL discs, different brand names and so forth. To ensure compatibility with your DVD players or stand alone DVD players, that sort of thing, that’s what they are for. Just click on the appropriate brand name and choose the burn speed, it is useful if you’ve bought a DVD+/-R disc with a speed that your DVD burner does not support, you can then change it here. But that’s not important now, what you should do now is click on the ‘Apply recommended DVD media tweaks’ It’ll confirm your tweaks, so just click on the ‘OK’ button. Now, under the ‘[bold]General Patches[/bold]’ menu click on all of the square option boxes except the second last one, which is ‘Utilize “force-recalibration” for 8x +R’. When all of that is done, click on ‘Save As’ at the bottom and assign a new name to your firmware patch, say a name like ‘DVD Dual Layer burning’ for example and there you’re almost done. Now double click on this new file, ‘DVD Dual Layer burning’, don’t worry about the message warning you that it is ‘only’ for the drive model 832S, just click on the ‘yes’ button. When the program starts be sure to make sure that no other programs are running and to choose the appropriate DVD burner model assigned to the appropriate drive, which in this case it should be ‘[bold]LITE-ON DVDRW SHOW-812S[/bold]’ now click on ‘Update’ button and you’re done!! It’ll ask you to reboot, so do so and everything should be perfect!
Thanks for all the info we all appreciate your time and effort.Give yourself a pat on the back mate you deserve one. John179
Good write-up Kirin! The only thing I would add is that if you are burning a DL disk, and you have nero 6.3 and dvd shrink 3.2, I would recommend skipping dvd shrink and just using Nero. On the 3 test DL's I did, the Nero burn was almost 15 minutes faster. Of course, if speed isnt a concern, the burn I did with DVD Shrink worked just fine (in my pc dvd player at least...all failed in my home player, but thats another sad thread), and DVD Shrink does remove the UP's which is nice being able to skip the stupid mandatory previews on some dvd's. HTH, Nate
John179, I hope my post will prove to be useful to those with a similar make and model as mine. I was only glad to write up the rough guide. Well, it's not really a guide is it? Heh. Ntjones, I've recently upgraded to Nero 6 (the latest version) and to my disappointment I still had to purchase additional plug-ins to recode DVD and all. So it's a bit dismal for me to try and use Nero for DVD burns. One thing I've noticed is that the really cheap DVD players out there, the new models current doing the rounds now, the ones made in China and all, play these new DVD+R DL discs perfectly. My higher end DVD player doesn't like it too much it makes a loud whirring noise and this is despite it being brand new. So I bought two of those cheap DVD players, heh, they are of course very cheap, I mean why risk the possible damage (if any) by using the DVD+R DL discs on my expensive player when these cheap ones do the job even better. Of course then there is the whole MPEG decoding issue and all to deal with on the cheap ones, but the quality is not too bad.
This is always the way with cheap dvd players made on the asian market or where ever. They seem to be more compatible than the more exspensive ones. This is why i always go cheap with dvd players.I can not remember the name of my current dvd player i purchased for £50.All i know is it plays more than my old mans £200 dvd player. Cheers John179
I agree - the el cheapo Chinese/Tiawanese players tend to be more compatible with a wide variety of media and normally do not activite regional coding.
Thanks for the great post Kirin! It will definitely be a great asset to those just dipping their toes into the DL game
Read with much interest of Kirin's post on flashing 812-S Liteon. I have been here for two weeks and have really been appreciative of the knowledge shared here. My problem is this is the only forum I have been into that I can't print a good copy like kirin's instructions on flashing the 812-S so that it will burn DL disk. The text is not wrapped around like usual. I would like to flash as per his instructions but lose too much when printing. Help please!
No problem Wylds, if what I read is correct then I can surely help you here. You don't want to print out the whole thread, as you'd only wish to have the guide printed, but can't get around to it? As it so happens I was typing this mini-guide at work and planned on posting it when I got back home, so I have it in Office Word document format. I can send you that very file via email if that is preferred. I'll Private message you, and perhaps if you so wish, you could give me your email account and I shall send it through that. Just click on your private messages link up at the top of the page, a little above the forums date and all. Just so you know, I have already sent you the private message as of posting this reply. If it hasn't gotten through do let me know. Otherwise you could just copy and paste the texts of my guide and paste it into Words and then print it of that.
Highlight the text you want, then right click, copy. Then I go to my desktop, right click and click new --> then text document. Then open document, right click, paste, all your text there, nice and easy.
Thanks Psychtrip and Kirin. I really appreciate the quick reply. My liteon 812-S has been working great since I installed about two weeks ago but I would like to burn DL's also without having to buy a new burner.. I have backed up over thirty of my DVD's and no coasters.Having D Shrink and Decrypter makes it real simple. Click Click and it is done.I have read every post I can find and like the instructions that Kirin has posted. I just ordered 100 Ritek DVD's from Newegg and they had a bonus of one DL for each fifty purchased and so I have two free DL's coming today.
steeljay the first post say's shrink works fine.I think DVD Decryptor will work perfect as well considering it is designed to rip SL and DL to your hard drive. Can't see there being and major problems.
