dvd-r playing problem

    i bought a dvd player from walmart and it says it plays dvd-r but all the one's i have tried it won't work, is there a certain burning software i should use or any other suggestions. i would really like your opinion

    i meant a dvd home dvd player it is a magnavox dp100mw8b it has progressive scan and it said it plays dvd-r but i can't get it to work is there a certain way or software that i can use
