I need to know WHY this happens. You have a dvd player, right. For months it plays dvd-r's fine...then after awhile it begins having problems with them and before you know it, it hardly plays any. Mind you they are the same dvd-r's being played. I keep all my dvd's and dvd-r's spotless and I have cleaned the dvd player's lens and nothing changes yet the player starts skipping and stopping on these dvd-r's. Why? All of my regular dvd's play with NO problem. Bothers the shit out of me...please help.
What brand blanks did you use to back up the movies? If the discs were manufactured using CMC Magnetics dye, then that is more likely your culprit. Over time the dye in cheaper discs deteriorate rendering your backup with less than desireable playback quality, or worse unplayable.
I agree w/ LOCOENG. Those are the tell tale signs of a disc degrading. Run one of those thru this prog and post back with the manufacturer id. http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/dvd_identifier.cfm
so I have some movies that I've burned onto CMC media and its like a 50/50 chance whether it'll skip or not during playback, but the ones that dont actually turned out pretty spiffy. What Im wondering is, are the ok ones going to crap out on me after awhile or will I be ok just keeping them as, and not transfering them to higher quality media.
You are probably lucky that you've got a 50/50 chance (right now) on the ones you've already burned, but yes over time they will degrade to a point of unplayability. I've heard of as little as six months time seeing issues with the CMC discs. Do yourself a favor and get some good blanks (Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, Ritek, or Sony, Maxell, and Fuji made it Japan) and backup your backups while you still can.
I'm an idiot. What is a CMC disc? I bought all these bad dvd-r movies or boxing match copies and the like off of private guys on ebay. Also. I'm referring to stand alone dvd players and recorders not computer drives so i don't know if that makes a difference. When I do get a good dvd recorder (stand alone), which ones are best in a reasonable price range and what are the best recordable discs to buy?? I've always trusted MAXELLE for my audio blanks so... wow ! thanks a lot! I wonder though, is it possible to back up a CMC hiccupy DVD onto better media and have it turn out alright?
