Nero 8 wont burn DVD+/-/R/RW, gives message, "illegal disk, could not perform end of disk at once", my DVD burner is Philips, could it be I need to update the driver? New firmware? Or should I just stick with DVD-R?
in order to analyze what's going on..... we need a Nero log. but to answer some of your questions: Firmware is programming that is inserted into a programmable memory area of your drive, thus becoming a permanent part of a drive. This 'software' is called firmware and can be updated with a firmware flasher. A firmware upgrade can add new functionality to your drive. Also bug fixes and improvements are done by firmware upgrades. It also adds more media codes and write strategies to the drive to improve burning capabilities and disk recognition. Doing a firmware upgrade should only improve your drive. If you are getting an ILLEGAL DISK error that means that Nero is having a problem with your disk.... whether it can't recognize it or it's scratched or it's full, etc. it is having a problem with it. A firmware update might help. Or just use better media....Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim. Until we can see a Nero log we can only guess as to why you get the error!
How can I attach the Nero log? Must I type the entire log into the message window or is there another way?
if you drag your mouse across the whole log (left click and hold down the button as you highlight the whole log!~)this will highlight everything..... then right click on the mouse and hit COPY! Now go to REPLY and at the curser.... RIGHT CLICK mouse button and hit PASTE.... now you copied and pasted the whole text into the reply area!
Many thanks for your kind help, here's the Nero log file, please let me know if it adds to your knowledge. update your firmware to P1.5 read above about firmware! turn on your DMA for your drive: http://my.afterdawn.com/alkohol/blog_entry.cfm/231/dmaissues read about DMA and PIO mode: http://winhlp.com/node/10 edit out your serial #s on the very top, under your name, of your Log, like you did inside the Nero log! you have two versions of Nero 8 NOT good. what I would do is install the latest version of Nero 8 but first .... save your serial #s, then uninstall and use the Nero 8 cleaning tools, found here: http://www.nero.com/enu/support-nero8-tools-utilities.html do a registry clean up using this free cleaner: CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/download then do a defrag and reboot! now reinstall Nero 8.3.2.1, found here: http://www.filehippo.com/download_nero_7_premium/ download and install the latest version on Nero 8! once installed put back your serial #s. try these changes out and see if this helps. good luck and welcome to afterdawn!
Ahh, I see. I do have multiple versions of Nero. My new computor came with Nero 7 bundled in the software. But Nero 7 didnt burn DVD's so I downloaded a "trial version" of Nero 8 and then purchased Nero 8. Because I am in France all my original Nero software was in French and what I recall doing after buying Nero 8 was that I downloaded an English version or perhaps an english "update". (I have two Nero 8 "setup" icons on my screen, one for the french and one for the english.) In my list of programs installed I show two , one is "Nero 7 Essentials" and the other is Nero8 Trial, each has about 550 Mo. I will follow your instructions but the only thing Im not clear about is the part about serial numbers. I bought Nero online so I have my "Nero Code", or "license key" which IS also the "serial number", there is just ONE serial number, right? Also, I didnt edit out any serial number when I sent you the Nero log so I am not sure what you are referring to there, Right under the name "J Gayneau" are a series of three numbers, the top one starting with "9K20" is my "serial number", Im not sure what the others are??Should the others be eliminated? Your instructions by the way are very clear and I thank you .
PS: I do not have a Nero disk, so Nero 7 Essentials that came bundled with my software is still on my computor. In order to activate the plug in DVD burner for Nero 8 it was necessary to use Nero 7, go to "Tools", "Control Center"..."License" and put in my serial number. IF I Uninstall all my Nero do you know how I would go to Nero and download the latest version? Can I just go to their site without going thru "tools" / "control center" and use my serial number to download Nero 8.3.2.1?
PPS Progress I downloaded the Firmware and checked re the DMA/PIO, Mine says "DMA if available" its on autoselect so it is not "only PIO", So if I understood corectly, then, I do NOT need to deinstall the driver, right? I can proceed to the Nero issues?
PPPS: At this point, just with the Firmware update, I re-tried burning and received the same Nero log messages. IE, Just the new firmware is not enough...
you updated your firmware now..... good. Did you get a different brand of DVD? change your disk to better media! Use Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim! Now.....your DMA issue.... did you follow the instructions in the guide? If your Philips drive is showing that it has DMA on then you are set. You still didn't edit out your serial #s. hit the edit icon above your reply where the LOG is! then you can edit out your serial #s! now.... from my understanding you have a good, KEEP THAT AVAILABLE SO YOU CAN PUT BACK YOUR LICENSE KEY ........ now UNINSTALL ALL YOUR VERSIONS OF NERO! THEN FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS ABOVE TO REINSTALL THE LATEST VERSION! after you installed the latest version of Nero..... put in your license key again! Now you are ready to try again! with Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden media...... try to burn your DVD ..... if not successful, copy and paste the NEW NERO LOG so I can see what's happening.
serial no's are now edited out, I didnt quite understand where to do that, will do the Nero uninstall, just not quite sure how to reinstall it from a download because I dont thinnk I can download it without going through my existing Nero which I cant very well do if Ive unistalled it So, , may just first use my code to download the installer for the update then uninstall the old, that way Ill be sure to have the new version without any question whether Im entitled to it Thanks so much for you help and knowledge
nooooooo use this download: http://www.filehippo.com/download_nero_7_premium/ make sure you use the Nero cleaning tools after you uninstall NERO: http://www.nero.com/enu/support-nero8-tools-utilities.html follow instructions and DOWNLOAD the utility and run it! follow my previous instructions on cleaning out registry and defragging! then install your latest version of Nero!!! as shown above!
But...It looks like the link you gave to download Nero 8 is only a link to a Nero Burning Rom as opposed to the whole Nero 8 package that I have installed, and its a 15 day trial version? I dont understand how that will replace what Ive got
noooooo it's for Nero 8.3.2.1 full version..... ONCE YOU PUT IN YOUR LICENCE KEY! OR IF YOU WANT YOU CAN DOWNLOAD FOR NERO ITSELF .... SAME THING: http://www.nero.com/enu/nero8-introduction.html
I see, So during the download of Nero 8, or after the download, I will be prompted to put in my license key? That will be an automatic part of the process? Or must I do something else to activate the license key?
One other thing...can you tell that my current Nero is Nero Ultra? I cant recall if it is, I know its "Nero 8" , but if my license key isnt for "Nero Ultra", just for "Nero 8, might I have a problem since that is apparently what the download will be?
