DVD-R won't burn anymore, dvd+r still will

I am no novice to computers, but I am still learning when it comes to burning - here's the situations. Gateway 7405gx laptop, has an hl-dt-st gwa 4080n drive that burned everything fine for about 5 months.

I have a spindle of fujifilm03's, have burned about 15 no problem, now all of a sudden my drive won't recognize dvd-r's (tried some taiyo's, sonys, ricohs, just to be sure it wasn't brand), but it will still recognize dvd+r's as blank media. Did full clean of nero, alc 120, dvd decrypter, reinstall no dice.

Redid the aspi layer with 4.7, forced 4.6 using forceaspi 1.7, tried another gcopy of the 0g03 firmware my drive came with, tried rpc-1 firmware, hell right now I'm using the 0s3t (the sony one) that people have had success burning DL's with on this drive - still recognizes all cd-r's and dvd+r's, but no dvd-r's.

All throughout each change I have reinstalled individually and together said burning programs above, and I either get no recognition whatsoever, or on simulation/test (nero/decrypter) (as I was sick of making coasters - I'm not in an area where its easy to get discs atm - read: combat zone :)), I get cannot find reference point in decrypter, could not perform end of disc-at-once in nero (which is progress I was getting couldn't perform start but during all of my install/reinstall/driver/firmware updates that got fixed).

I use daemon tools as well, but I uninstalled that to see if that helped with the DAO error as it was partially an i/o thing, but to no avail.

The drive is on its own ide port, dma still good and using (ie not in pio mode)

At this point I'm going to try to pull some trades with some buds to get +r's for my -r's, but I'm still stumped as to why the drive just stopped recognizing and refusing to burn -r's.

    Any ideas out there?

    Thank you in advance

edit: forgot to mention I have searched and read every thread of pertinence for the last forever on doom 9 and afterdawn about media, aspi, drive burn out, power, etc, for the last 2 weeks, which is why I'm posting as a long time reader, first time question in the newbiew forums cause it just feels like one of those easy answer I just can't grasp!

Try downloading this tool http://www.dvdinfopro.com/ it will tell you what formats your burner will support, if the DVD-R box isn't ticked the problem is there.

    best of luck

Okay tried out your program in case nero infotool was wrong, but the drive in infotool supports everything but dvd-ram and dl's, although with the firmware it now 'supports' dl's, just haven't had a chance to try any out yet :)

I KNOW that it supports dvd-r's though as the current spindle I have of 25 I have burned 15 fine, and then it just stopped recognizing the discs as blank media - they still work fine on a friends comp so the dics are still good *crappy but still 'good' hehe* - sorry that that wasn't more clear in the first post :)

Nice program btw - can play and make isos, kinda handy hehe - okay according to your program it supports everything except dvd-r dl, hd-burn-r/rw, ddcd-r/rw, and mount rainer for read, same for write in addition to cdrw cav - using the 0S35 revision firmware, atapi-3, rpc-1

So still at a loss - more ideas! :)

Okay - so the drive at least recognizes some YUDEN dvd+r's as blank media, reports free space, etc

but still won't burn with nero or anything else - here's an example nero log for ya'll to analyze

also couple questions before the log - dvd+r's after getting write error still report as empty unlike -r's - is this normal or a fluke? also ... crap forgot my other question, I'll post it later haha
