What media are you using? Made and model of the burner?

using verbatim discs and have worked well until this current problem arose. make is maxtor and model is 6B25050. have also tried and failed with phillips and maxell. im thinking that it may be goosed although windows troubleshooting says dvd640b in working order. typical newbie struggling!! cheers.

Windows troubleshooting is worthless in this case since Windows cannot determine the status of whether the drive can read or not.

6B25050 is the model of your hard drive. (Maxtor doesn't make optical drives) binkie7 was asking for the model of your DVD-RW drive, which is probably an HP 640b

Did you try a blank CD?

    Does it recognize pressed CD/DVD?
Does it recognize other burned "CD-DVD?

In any case it appears that your drive has become defective and needs to be replaced.

Yep could be on it's way out. That last firmware update on this was 5/2006.
Update the firmware - my guess is you may have never updated it - the latest is E223.

tried dailun suggestions, not recognising any CD/DVD whatsoever burned or not. Also done what blinkie7 said. Firmware update to no avail. Any ideas for drive replacement would be welcome. Thanks again for your assistance.
