hi, i'm a little confused. i was under the impression that the maximum capacity of a DVD-R was 4.7 GB, and anything larger than that, it must be a DVD+R.........but then i saw on some website that they make DVD-R at like 10Gb, and even upto like 18Gb or something..........is it just that they're using the term DVD-R for all DVD writable media, or can you actually get DVD "-" R that are that big............if you can get them, where from, and will they work in my DVD-R drive (cos it has a huge 4.7GB logo on the front of the draw)
No I think what you read was what people were talking about with pressed dvds that you buy in the form of movies, box sets etc. I believe that was a discussion about dummy files. dvd-r or dvd+r has the same capacity. I think it is ~4.4 gigs Off topic, but I ran into another disc with dummy files. I was able to see this with DVD shrink and when I dragged both files into the box for reauthoring I noticed that the size didn't change. So maybe this is just a quirk with DVD Shrink. The other dummy files I've encountered I saw with DVD shrink as well... Just my two cents.
Hi GlennT, let me explain! DVD-R and DVD+R are the same capacity cd's! DVD+R is only slightly more advanced though but nothing major really, I personally prefer dvd-r Now both of those are known as DVD-5! They store 4.38gb (the 4.7 is Japanese Gb's!). Retail dvd's are DVD-9, these dvds are pressed and store up to 7.95gb's! There are also double sided disc's. so a double sided DVD-R is known as DVD-10 and can store 4.38gb on each side, a total of about 8.75gb! So double sided retail dvd's are called DVD-18 and can store 7.95gb on each side, a total of about 15.90gb. There is also a DVD-14. Can you guess??? hmm 9+5=14 CORRECT , its a double sided disc with dvd-5 on one side and dvd-9 on the other so 4.38gb on one side and 7.95gb on the other. AHHH! i think i get it now.........so you CAN get DVD-R that can store 8.75 Gb, which can be burnt with a normal DVD-R writer (despite the 4.7Gb logo on the front)......so do i have this right now??????? if this is right though...........i still have one question...........with the DVD-10 discs, if you want to backup a "pressed" DVD or game DVD which is bigger than the ordinary 4.7Gb disc, can you do so with these DVD-10 discs, and how easy are they to write to, and eventually use in your DVD-Player/PS2??? sorry for being a pain in the butt noobie, but everyone has to start somewhere. by the way, thankx both of you for the info, much appreciated

oh, right..........so basically, there is no way to do a straight copy of anything over 4.38Gb, without splitting it to 2DVD-R's or reducing the quality to fit onto one DVD-R.........but all DVD-R are no more than 4.38Gb (with the exception of factory pressed DVD's).........ok, i think i really have got it this time!
