Just buy a DVD recorder and use RCA cables to go between the VCR and DVD recorder ... You know 'out' on one to 'in' on the other .. just follow the colors (white to white, yellow to yelloe, red to red)

I have two LiteOn LVW-5005s that I'm very happy with ... search around and you'll find 'em for under $120

Just be aware that most DVDs have copy restrictions that will be an obstacle when you're trying to record them onto VHS. To get around this you'll have to do ripping to a computer first using software that you can learn about elsewhere in these forums.

If your VHS player is a rather basic one (meaning only one input/output for audio), you'll need the audio cable connecting your VHS and DVD player to take this into account - otherwise you'll miss some of the audio elements on the DVD when recording onto VHS (since you'll only record one channel). Such a cable costs about $7 at Radio Shack.

    Good luck. -jk

Depending on which brand DVD recorder you purchase, there is a good possibility that a Macrovision hack is available ...

My LiteOn recorders have a 'work around' that defeats macrovision

I believe my Philips DVD recorder has no Copy protection hack so I use a special scart lead between the units which cut's out the signal.
Also, depending on the age of your VHS recorder, it may not look for a copy protection signal (quite old ones)so DVD to VHS might work anyway.

Thanks for the advice. Purchased the lite on and hooked it up to tv. Was wondering how to hook up the vcr through all of this, in manual it says not to hookup dvd recorder through vcr, but right through cable and tv. Also have the rca wires to connect the vcr. What else do I need to do? Thanks!!

    Good advice. Good purchase
Just a question why would you wamt to convert DVD to VHS.
Normaly you would connect the signal sorce to the VHS, than the DVD. than the TV. If you have to convert DVD to VHS, the DVD has to be first. It can be done I've done so on one occasion for a special purpose.

Would like to do both dvd to vhs and vhs to dvd. My mother who is in her 80s does not have a dvd player and would not know how to use one. She is comfortable using the vcr and have a few movies both home and regular movies she would like to have.

    OK!! see your goal
I feel you need to state the machines you have

Can I assume that the VHS tapes and the DVD are commercial omes and may be copy protected
You may be required to have another DVD player and a switching system
What recording mode and what inputs/outputs are avail on the VCR.
What kind of service, Off air, satellite ,cable. is the service to the VCR,an RF cable.

Copied a regular movie from vhs to dvd without problem. Just need to know the hookup part of it to get dvd to vhs. I have cable, and the svideo from the tv is going to the svideo on the liteon. Antenna from tv is going to antennae out on vcr. Av output audio on liteon is going tv. And the av input is going to audio video on vcr. I probably have this whole thing a mess. I have to leave the liteon all the time to get tv reception. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
