I've been concidering buying a DVD/VCR combo recorder. What I would like to do mostly is record my favorite tv shows and once in awile a good movie that's on cable. I'd like to be able to burn the recorded shows on a DVD then be able to play those on my portable dvd player when I'm traveling. But now I'm hearing about copy protection on certain shows and movies. How do I find out what shows or movies are protected, and is it even worth buying a DVD recorder now?

This is an old thread regarding cable and protected shows.

I'm sure if you Google the subject that more information will be available.

In my own case, I only record over the air (I don't have cable) - also where I live, many shows are seen on TV before the US transmission date - and these shows appear as torrents overnight.

In truth, the cable company wishes to maximize profit - and most people seem happy to co-operate with that stance.
