I am brand new to this. I collect old hockey and football games and trade them with other collectors. I currently have all the games on DVD-Rs. I am trying to rip them on my computer so I can then put them back on blank DVDs so I can send out copies. I need to know what is a good ripping program. I also do not know what is the file format to rip the DVD to. Should I use Mpeg Mpeg2 Avi? I guess I am looking for the best quality for when I copy the file back to the blank DVD. Also, do I need a separate program to burn the ripped files back to the blank DVD? Any help with this would be much appreciated. Thanks
Are these games already on single layer disks, i.e. are they already backed up? If they are already copies then you can just use DVD Decrypter, which is free, to rip to an iso file and then burn that iso file to your DVD Disk. Are the files already in DVD compliant form, are they VTS files? Do you have Nero?
I burn the games from TV to DVD-R using a DVD/VHS Player/Burner. I do have Nero. I am trying to make muliple copies of the DVDs but also shrink the files for space resions and keep the same quality. This is a stupid question but is the iso file better than the mpeg and does it take up as much space? Thanks again.
You want to make a disk that will play on all players so you have got to make video compliant files, not only that but you would be best to use DVD-R media so that all players will play them. Are the output files from your recorder in VTS format? Are they over two hours long, or does you recorder compress to get more on the disk than two hours? If so then you will need to compress this again, not always giving good quality, but unless you want to split necessary. If you have Nero you should be able to just use this program.
The games are over 2 hours long when. I can put up to 8 hours on one DVD but almost never go over 4 hours. So rip them to video compiant files?
Okay because you have already compressed by 50% you are already dealing with quality loss. But your disks are already the right size all you need is to recopy, hopefully. Open Nero select CopyDVD and then do not do it on the fly, you want it to temporarily put it on your HDD.
Sorry if you read the wrong uneditted answer, I had to let it rattle for a moment. I too have a DVD Recorder and had to think of how I transferred have not done it in a while.
If you put your disk in and cannot copy because the file is too big, then you will have to compress and do it the long way, try this first and then we will have to try the compression.
hi i hope you don't mind me dropping in arnie what i do when i "borrow" a film of tv with my dvd-recorder is fairly straight foreward it doesnt matter how much time is on the disc the info is still smaller than 4.7gb,and because it will play on your stand-alone is already in the right format take said disc open dvdshrink...open disc...re-author the part you wish to keep (if you only want one 1 game on a multi-game recording) useing frame start/frame end. hit backup. after decrypter has dropped it to hard drive, burn with your prefered burn engine (in my case, decrypter. why bother to change when its an automatic burn) if you want the whole disc, as arnie says, it's a straight copy disc to disc. by the way arnie ,like your new avatar
Hey gurnard, got your computer going again. I usually do not go beyond the 2 hour limit on mine, mainly because I have some quality issues. I suppose I really got to bite the bullet and update the fw on it. Been holding off because I have not had any problems, but I have noticed pixellation when recording from its HDD which I do not notice when I record from the TiVo HDD.
hi buddy yep took a while, could'nt use the reload cd, so had to do it manually, takes a little time. then even more time to reload all my bits, then set up carol's side (the wife). i've got my recorder set on 4hrs, so that when i see a movie on tv that i like and have'nt got in my library (usually an oldy and being screened at some ungodly hr in the morning) i wack it on record and let it run. then do the shrink bit as to the quality, to be honest, now my eyes aren't what they were, i don't really notice the difference. lol
I know what you mean about those oldie movies on in the middle of the night. Got several of them on my TiVo ready to record. Last one is The Citadel with Robert Donat, not one that is on DVD or even comes on the telly very much. I am a sucker for the old movies.
I used DVDshirnk and it worked like a charm. The Nero program froze up every time. I dont think DVDshirnk allows me to store the file from the DVDs on my hard drive but I can make perfect copies. Thanks arniebear and gurnard for your help.
Just hit the little arrow bar on the left side of your panel, if your referring to the App menu on the side.
That is the ONLY thing that I didn't click on..how dumb am I(that of course doesn't require an answer)
You have no idea how long it took me to find the stupid toolbar in WMP 10. Why do they have to hide these things on people, I am too old for games
