As a novice to this thing, I'm quite puzzled about my problem. The burner was working quite well. Then, I caught a virus (W32Alcra.A), which Norton has supposedly gotten rid of. However, I have not been able to use my burner since then. Am I missing something? I've tried the Device Manager which says that the device is working properly. I've somehow gotten into the System Information (it took me a while how to figure that one out) and the info given says that my burner is recognized as a CD-ROM. Is this right? How can I change that, if indeed it has to be changed? It is an Optorite DD 1205.
Yeah...same thing happened to me except without a virus. I took my desktop PC over to my friend's house one day and after turning it on I realized that the burner worked okay but it wouldn't read blank DVD's. I put in a Verbatim DVD+R and the DVDRAM turned into a Cd ROM drive. So, I tried just about everything. Thinking it was the burner, just today I went out and bought a new one. I bought a well known brand (Memorex) and I even installed the new cables with it. The jumper settings are right and everything, and the DVD burner still only reads DVDs as a CD drive. Any help?
Try going into your device manager. Find both IDE controllers and your burner drive and remove them from the list. Then reboot and let Windows reinstall them properly. Hopefully that will correct your problems. If not we can start looking elsewhere. Jerry
Thanks for replying Jerry. Tried your advice and the drive still does not recognize any DVD media. This is listed under device properties: Optorite DVD RW DD 1205 Device Type - DVD/CD ROM Drives Manufacturer - (Standard CD-ROM Drives) Location - Location 0 Still stumped.
i used to own 2 of those drives...the Optorite DD1205, 12x burner, they were and still REMAIN the WORST drives i have EVER owned~! i kept up with all the firmware for it, updating regularly and used HIGH QUALITY media such as Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim and Ritek to burn to (@4x no less)...i have personally found the laser to be very weak...i RMA'd (Return Merchandise Authorization) TWICE for that drive...it broke down and stopped working after 6 months of minimal use about 3 years ago...since then, i have purchased MANY new dvd burners to replace it, all with NO PROBLEMS at all... i personally think from experience that Optorite's build quality in their dvd burners are HORRIBLE...their customer support when i tried to contact them is NON-EXISTENT...i emailed them half a dozen times with NO response...even tried to call their customer support number...no longer active... here is the link to what i CURRENTLY use...i think YOUR optorite DD1205 MAY be on it's LAST LEG and if you have the $$, i suggest you purchase a GOOD QUALITY burner...optorites are = to CMC MAG media (which if those that know me will attest i simply DESPISE) http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/224674 good luck
Thanks for the advice Jerry, but it proved to be unsuccessful. I uninstalled all of my IDE Controllers and both my DVD burner and drive and my DVD drive still shows up as a CD drive whenever a DVD is inserted. Strange thing though, whenever I boot my computer up after uninstalling my DVD drive...a little box also pops up and apparently installs a CD-Drive, instead of just the DVD drive. Maybe it's because of Windows Professional edition? I'm not sure...but that CD-ROM box might have something to do with it. It doesn't show up in device manager either, and my DVD drive shows up as generic instead of the model name...when it appears in my computer...(DVD-R Drive as opposed to Memorex *Model Number*)
