I have a Philips SPD6104BD DVD RW drive and for some reason it will not read commercial DVD disks. I can read the home-burned DVDs with no problem at all. When I insert a store bought or rented DVD, it spins for a while and tells me to insert a disk. I've tried upgrading the firmware to the latest version and the same thing happens. All of the playback software (Nero, Media Player, Real Player etc) tells me the same thing and when I go to control panel (XP Home edition)it only shows up as DVD RAM drive with no disk inserted. Is there anything anyone can suggest I try? Thanks for any help.
Did the drive play the commercial discs previously? Could also be a driver issue. Uninstall the device in Device Manager and restart. See what happens then.
Thanks for the reply. Yeah the DVD drive played the DVDs previously with no problem. I have removed the drive and reinstalled it from Windows but the same problem occurs. The funny thing is that the drive will play older commercial disk (I tried Austin Powers and Flight of the Phoenix) without any problems. Iron Man and Hulk will not read on the PC but read on the standalone DVD player just fine.
