have you tried cleaning the lens? perhaps over time it has gotten dirty/accumulated some dye residue/etc.

i have the same drive as you, mine is still going on strong after a year's time...but, i HAVE had to keep the lens clean/cleaned the lens every once in awhile~ try that to see if it helps, if worse comes to worse, you could always get an RMA (return merchandise authorization) from Lite-On~ you says it's less than a year old right? you are STILL under warranty~

    good luck~

hi kivory666 how do you clean the lens? I own one of those lens cleaners that you put the disc in the drive and play it and it cleans while playing but that doesnt work due to the drive doesnt want to read the disc is there another way to clean the lens

     Pull the drive

     Remove the cover

CAREFULLY clean the lens with alcohol and a Q-tip

Note • The purer the alcokol, the better (I use Everclear)

Bonus note • This method is not recommended when under warranty, if there are seals that will be broken when the cover is removed

    Dude, i have a Lite-On, and il tell you. [bold]DON'T BOTHER!![/bold]

I contacted the place (Lite-on) and they told me that their drives are "disposable", the same thing happened to my drive,

but just to be sure, is it making slight grinds while reading DVDS ONLY??

if so, kick her to the curb, or keep her like i did, it will still read and write cds easily.

LOL nate, there is a VERY good chance that your new Sony 16x internal is IN FACT, a rebadged LITE-ON~! hahahhaa

    i know MY Sony dru710A = rebadged Liteon 1633s~ :)
    and i believe the Sony dru720A = rebadged Liteon 1673s~ :)

and the top Sony model, the dru800a = once again REBADGED Liteon SOHW-1693s~ their TOP model~ :)

well, weigh your options...i KNOW you just purchased a new Sony, which as i mentioned above, is quite POSSIBLY a Liteon, i have 3 Liteon drives/Sony rebadged and i have NOT had a problem with them yet, one of them for about a year and half now with over 1,000+ burns on it~ still going strong.

i would have to disagree with Shinraboy as to his comment that Liteons are not HIS preference/opinion of a "good drive", all i can say is, Liteons are HELL-of-a-LOT-better than an HP~! :) as that was HIS first recommendation for a new drive...good thing you DIDN'T get an HP, now THOSE drives SUCK~!

i now have 6 drives for my desktops, Sony, Pioneer, Liteon, Nec, and now a new Benq~ :) ALL of these drives blow away the HP in every way.

as long as it works for you nate, it IS brand new...i have BOTH of those drives...

the problematic drive you had..the 1633s, i have that AND the sony dru-710a, which in fact are identical drives, but exterior is different~

and your NEW sony dru800a, i have that too, but in the PURE OEM form =Liteon 1693S~ :)

i haven't had that new dru800a/1693s that long, less than a month, but so far so good...as long as YOU like it, then the problem you had initially is SOLVED~ :)

what he meant was, "they don't make their own drives." they're all re-badged drives from other companies, and usually they don't work very well.

I've burned over 150 dvds (and countless cds) with my LDW-851sx, no coasters, NO problems. I 'thought' I was upgrading and bought an HP 640e (for dual layer capability). Burned 5 dvds and the HP is dead, shows up in Winxp, but won't read ANYTHING. Tried everything, it's toast. Just installed a Lite-on 1693s replacing the dead HP, bet it burns more than 5 dvds!
