first off, the idiot award goes to me. Now i'll explain why:

i had a major hardware upgrade on my computer and decided to burn everything to a DVD-RW to backup all my important data in case i had to format the hard drive (which i did).

i first wrote the dvd in nero 6. multisession dvd iso. then i had some more data to put on so i figured i'd just make another session. but the multisession appears to be finialized. no problem, i'll just erase the disc and re-write the whole thing. so i do this, but i don't have nero verify the data because... well it worked the first time why won't it work agian?

skip ahead to when i need the data again. i put the dvd-rw in my burner cause my dvd-rom drive can't hardly read any burnt dvd's let alone rw discs. my burner (IOMAGIC GENERIC DVD+/-RW 4XMAX) says the disc is a cdrom with an unreadable file system. that's odd. so i go into nero and use its disc info utility, that's a little better. it tells me the disc has 3.7GB of data which is about right. however it doesn't show any ISO 9600 or Joliet system on there. its just got one session with 3.7GB of raw data.

[bold]So my question is:[/bold] does anyone know how to get this raw data off the dvd and into some kind of readable format. i tried iso buster but i'm not really sure what i'm doing.

    help pleeeease.

p.s. i posted this on the extremeoverclocking.com forum as well. those guys seem to know a lot too.

    bump...

now i know bumping ain't cool but how on earth are people supposed to get questions answered on here?! i posted this yesterday and now its 3 pages deep.

there's a lot of other 1 post threads this deep too. i wonder how many times people have to ask stuff to get it answered.

What process did you use to create the disc?

Did you just use the Create Data CD option in Nero Express or Nero Burning ROM?

When you looked at the disc using Nero's 'Disc Info' feature, did it report the session as closed? If it were left open, in the bottom left of the Disc Info window you would see two buttons appear. One labeled 'Close Session' the other "Close Disc". Use the close session option if its available and then see if you are able to obtain your data.

In October, we will provide a utility that will come with Nero 6, that may help you recover your data. It will be part of the free upgrade.

There are other DiscRecovery programs out there, but they cost money. you can try www.discrecovery.com

ok. i just burned it as a data dvd iso. i thought i had all the juliet and iso9660 stuff figured out. it did complain about some files being too many folders deep so i allowed whatever exception was needed for that.

i think the session must be closed cause there's no close session button anywhere in the nero info page. here's a screen shot of what it looks like.

i got a data recovery program that lets me get stuff off there but it recovered 32000+ unnamed files and some of them don't work cause i think they're supposed to be parts of the same file etc.

if there's something i can do with nero to make this thing read. or maybe that utility you guys are working on for october will do it.

Just wondering, but have you tried making an image of that disc with Nero, and tried burning it back to an -R disc. (I know it maybe of no use, but it is worth a shot, afterall Nero does seem to be able see the data there)..................

well i made an image file (dvd.nrg) and tried to mount it with my virtual cd/dvd program, Virtual DAEMON Manager V3.47

it looks the same on there as it does in the regular dvd-rom or dvd+/-rw drives. i haven't tried burning it cause i figured it'd be the same and would just be a waste of a dvd. is it possible this could actually work?

    [EDIT]
I suppose I could try burning it to one of my other dvd-rw discs. couldn't do any harm there. and seriously... can you "waste" a dvd-rw disc? aren't they all a waste?

no good. burning from the image just creates another bad disc. the image has all the errors the original had.

Did you burn the image to another RW, or did you try it to an R disc?

it was another RW cause i didn't want to waste a R disc if it didn't work. i know my drive can read RW fine cause its a DVD burner.

do you think there's any way it could possibly burn to a R any differently?

there is possibilities that it may have a different outcome on a -R (+R) disc as it'd close properly by itself rather than any manual interference

ah come off it dude. i post on forums, i know that no one gets paid for it.

i was frustrated cause i asked a question and it seemed like the only person bothering to read it was me. i bumped it cause i needed help and i was hoping that if it was at the top again it would have a better chance at being read than if it were 3 or 4 pages deep.

i wasn't mad at you guys for not answering quick enough, i was just trying to do what i could to get the question noticed.

it was either bump the message or let it sit there and rot and just repost the question again. i'm not insulting your system or insulting people that answer questions on afterdawn, i've answered a question or two for people on here myself.

feel free to go look at all my posts, i don't pick fights or anything. my question was slipping through the cracks and i wanted to try to bring it to someone's attention. i didn't swear or yell at anyone for not answering, i just said, "i still need help on this". that's all. chill

If you dont think I'm chilled enough then you seriously need to have a check up from the neck up yourself mate :)

I did search your thread(s) yesterday & there wasn't a lot of helping others at all (???)
So please drop the attitude or find yourself out in the cold...

i'm sorry i thought you were mad about this. apparently i took your threats to kick me off the forums the wrong way. i'm sure that these weren't threats but just idle friendly banter.

i'll keep in mind in the future that saying "i still need help" is offensive. although it didn't seem to offend anyone else that responded to my thread. but i'll take your word for it.

    [edit]
and as far as you being "chilled", you're not. someone who is "chilled" doesn't tell someone to cut out the attitude or we'll kick you out. that's not a friendly way to talk to people. and seriously, you don't kick someone out for being frantic about no one answering one problem. you kick out people that pick fights with people and cause unprovoked problems and stuff like that. i'm not a "trouble maker" or some kinda web "troll" or anything. you did react to something that wasn't aggressive or hostile in a pretty negative, hostile, attacking manner. i just said "i need more help, is anyone out there" and you're saying "cut it out or get out" seriously, lighten up a bit.
