DVD Shrink 3.0 Beta 5 + Nero 6 = Coasters Everywhere!

OK, I've searched endlessly thru the various forum posts, seen lots of "Nero 6 sucks" comments and more than a few "DVD Shrink makes coasters" comments, but still don't have a solution to my problem.

I'm trying to back up my own copy of Holes so my kids won't destroy it.

I've used DVD Shrink to shrink the DVD down to around 4.3gigs, per the many guides I've found here and elsewhere. Burn it via Nero 6 DVD-Video feature, put everything made from DVD Shrink into the VIDEO_TS folder. I'm using TDK DVD-RW these days (to keep from making more coasters), although I've also used TDK and Memorex DVD-R's as well. Burn goes fine.

What I get is a compressed DVD that plays fine in my computer (Sony Vaio P4 system), fine in my laptop (Thinkpad T30), with both systems seeing it as a DVD and launching WinDVD to play. -BUT- these same DVD-RW's WON'T play in my supposedly compatible stand-alone players. I have two set-top players: A Pioneer DVD-C503D and a Samsung DVD-V1000. Both of these players are listed on DVDRHELP.COM forums as being capable of playing DVD-R and DVD-RW...in fact, the Pioneer model is listed as one of the 'more compatible' DVD players out there.

No such luck for me.....coaster heaven. Each player will see the DVD copy, briefly show me that it's trying to load the menu (on the front display, anyway), and then either give an error or just stop. Pressing play, FF/RW, Menu button...nothing happens. The Samsung says it's an invalid disc...Pioneer just wont' play it.

I've experimented with a number of settings:

DVD Shrink: Used the re-author tool to create a VIDEO_TS folder with JUST the movie, no extras, and burned via Nero....same results...plays on my PC's, but won't play on either set-top box.

Nero 6: Tried the UDF/ISO settings as listed here and elsewhere to burn the DVD Shrink generated files. Still no luck.

I also have an XBOX DVD player...and it won't work either.

What on earth am I doing wrong? Media? BOTH Memorex and TDK are bad? I find that hard to believe!

    Help?

As my message indicated, I DID use Nero 6's DVD-Video mode at first, and when that hasn't worked, have also tried UDF/ISO mode. I get the same results with both methods....neither works.

I'm about to try a different burning application...I've got RecordNow (default burner came with my PC) and I'll try that next.

DVD Video Is the same as UDF/ISO. I would suggest you try uninstalling Nero 6 and re-installing Nero 5.5 latest. RecordNowMax should also solve your problems hopefully.

I'm going to try it with RecordNowMax first, as that's the only other licensed burner software I own. Someone also recommended Burnatonce, a freeware/donate-ware application.

You said I should de-install Nero6 and reinstall Nero 5.5.xx. I purchased a retail version of Nero6 and it's my understanding that my license key won't work with the dowloaded version 5.5 (assuming I can still even download that). Will it, indeed, work on prior relases of Nero?

I'm having the same problem with some DVD's with DVDshrink3 and Nero 6. I can't get through a burn with some DVD-R's. The weird thing is that I can get them to work with my Maxell DVD-RW and not the Ritek4x. So that throws the whole test thing out the window. I'm going to try another program because I've wasted like 10 Riteks.

OK folks, I gave Nero one last try, and here's what finally worked.....

I switched media! I stopped by the store on my way home and bought a few Sony DVD-RW's (version 1.1, model DMW47). Used the same settings I've indicated earlier in this thread, same DVD Shrink prepped files, same Nero 6 DVD-Video burn settings....and voila! The Sony DVD-RW backup of Holes runs fine!

Not only that, but I've tested this out on all four of my standalone players....

Pioneer C503D - Sony DVDRW works!
Samsung DV1000 - Sony DVDRW works!
    Toshiba MD9DM1 -Sony DVDRW works!

And even in my Suburban......an Audiovox VBP4000....which is NOT supposed to support much more than commercial DVD's....yup, you guessed it....Sony DVDRW works!

Looks like a media change for me....

I backuped my copy of Holes with DVD Shrink 3 Beta and Nero 6.0.19 using the DVD-Video mode. I have backed the movie up without problem. I even used the cheaper CompUSA DVD+R disc and it still recorded just fine. I would try some other media. Hope this helps.

Used smartripper/dvd2one/recordnow max on a compusa DVD-R and it works fine.

I think the message folks is if it works for you don't change it, but if it doesn't keep trying alternatives. Nero/RecordNow is a perfect example. Some PC's don't like Nero, others don't like RecordNow. Also it goes to show that +R discs have less problems with record/playback even though they are supposed to be less compatible with standalones.

For me, the lesson learned is that this is still more an art than a science.

It almost reminds me of the old Windows days when you'd find yourself doing all sorts of "voodoo" things to get windows to keep from crashing. I remember (vividly) trying to get my first ATI All-in-Wonder card to output a video signal. After literally weeks of GPF's and BSOD's, someone on Prodigy (remember that?) suggested that I delete all Window's HELP files...and it WORKED!!! Go figure....

Anyway, for me, the "voodoo" of burning DVD backups is somewhere shared between applications, drivers, OS configurations and media.

In this particular case, I'm now happily backing up my DVD's with DVD Shrink 3 beta 5, Nero 6.0.0.19, and using CompUSA DVD-R's and Sony DVD-R/RW's. Works for me....and as I can tell from reading this and hundreds of other forums....

    Your mileage may vary....unfortunately!

    Thanks again for eveyrone's suggestions.....

I don't see how this proves the compatibility issue with +R, when the original poster and at least one other poster stated that they had success with -R.

I acknowledge that. I'm not saying that -R discs are no good, it's just that I rarely see threads or posts about problems burning with +R, but very often with -R discs, so there must be something in it. Yes I use Shrink and Nero 5.5.10.54 - has always worked for me, but then so has all my other software programmes. The main key is most definitely scientific these days - you must get a decent PC with atleast 40gb hard drive, 64mb graphics, 256mb memory,a decent processor like AMD Athlon or Pentium and windows XP. If you haven't got similar specs just forget burning DVD's.

This newbie uses a Ricoh MP5125a+RW burner with TDK+RW media smartripper/dvd20ne123/DVDcopy from Intervideo.

I dont use +R media anymore cause when I do Murphy sticks his nose in.

    I pay $8.95AU for TDK+RW as I buy by the 10 pack
compared to $6.95AU for the +R I think of it as an insurance premium.

I think the choice of a good media is important to your success- dont buy the cheap stuff.

I use DVD Shrink 2.3 and then PrimoDVD and can play the DVD's in my Xbox. The only problem is sometimes the DVD will start slowing down and lock up somewhere in the middle of the movie. It starts getting a lot of pixalization. I'm not sure what the problem is yet. It could be DVD Shrink not compressing correctly or maybe Primo DVD. I can't get Nero to work right. The DVD's won't play in the Xbox or the stand alone DVD Player.

    http://www.chrismccann.co.uk/

there is a setting in nero udf/iso v1.02 partition and tick the "make compatible for xbox"

make sure you follow the guide and you have all files being burnt in a folder called VIDEO_TS

If you want your movies to skip and freeze just get Princo discs - it's almost guaranteed.
