Hi Doc409. I installed the newer nvidia drivers and it changed my setup. I was able to run a speed test. This is the results. I don't know anything about the results so I don't know if its good or bad. Primary Master WD 60GB-Ultra DMA 5-Ultra 100 Theoretical limit: 100.00 Burst Speed: 84.9 Sustained Speed: 46.7 Slave Maxtor 120GB-Ultra DMA 6-Ultra 133 Theoretical limit: 133.3 Burst Speed: 107.5 Sustained: 47.5 Secondary Channel Plextor 712A Ultra Dma-2
TO: sas7042. IDE:1 looks OK IDE:2 I don't trust CABLE SELECT. Try setting it to MASTER since it is the only drive on that channel. IDE:3 ??? Is this and on-board connection or a PCI IDE controller card? IDE:4 Same thing as for IDE:2 I'm thinking that you have things set up a bit wrong and that your OS, BIOS and Programs are not interacting as well as they should. TC _X_X_X_X_X_[small]Stretch the cash. Bargain hunting. System is not static.[/small]
To Buik: Everything is on the motherboard. What set up do you suggest. I will try setting my plextor drive to master. I've seemed to have got a little faster speed using file in Shrink its hovering around 3,000kb/s instead of dropping to low 2,000 within a minute of starting. I'm still having slow speeds encoding with disc in drive lower 2,000kbs. When I used Shrink to move an already shrinked file from one drive to another I'm getting 50,000+ kb/s but its not actually encoding anything since its already under 4.36gb. Thanks for any suggestions.
sas7042... If you don't have a lot of experience with these components, I suggest taking it one step at a time with the installation. I don't trust cable select either, yet I think I remember reading that it is recommended with the newer Plextors. I don't have one, and couldn't tell you. It would be good to know what mobo you have before making any firm configuration suggestions.
Hi Doc409 I have Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro 2 motherboard nVIDIA nFORCE2 Chipset Socket A / AGP 8X 4DDR (dual channel) 6-Chan Audio/ USB 2.0 / 1394 SATA/RAID/ATA133
Here's a nice article on your mobo. Your mobo has a lot of capabilities...more than which can be discused here. If you are going to try to run all the devices, make sure you have an adequate power supply. http://www.digital-daily.com/motherboard/gigabyte-7nnxp/ It appears the board will support parallel and serial RAID at the same time, which I find interesting. Anyway, the way you've listed things makes it look like you are running an optical drive on the parallel RAID. RAID is intended for hard drives. For basics, you should always put your optical drives on their own IDE channel, and your HDD drives on the other...that is , don't mix the two on the same channel if it can be avoided. As a final note, I would start out with just one hard drive and one optical drive, and get these working first with SP2 installed...as well as Shrink and NERO. I would then add these other components one-by-one, rebooting each time their drivers are installed.
Thanks Doc409 for all your help and information. I will try that. One more question would it be better to install xp on a larger drive or does it really matter. I've been using my other drives for my files and using the 60gb for my programs and the operating system.
That's a good question, especially with video rendering. Drive speed is much more important than size. Put your OS on your fastest drive with the most buffer memory. Try to use a 7200 RPM with 8 or 10 MB buffer. I would even suggest you partition this hard drive so that you only put software files on the root partition...and I think 20 GB would be more than enough. This 20 GB will also leave room for a 4000 MB min and max page file (virtual memory)that you will need to set yourself. What this configuration will do is isolate your system files from becoming fragmented. You can use the balance/other partition to store all your information files, mp3's, etc. You will also need to put a page file on the other partition or drive(s) where you will be encoding the video files. For the greatest speed, you will likely want to use a separate hard drive for these video files. What this does is put two hdd read/write heads into the process, rather than one.
mine encrypts at 2500kb and my cpu usage is 100% i have shrink in background mode but nero info aspi says not installed how do i install?
You can dl a routine that will remove/install the proper ASPI layer. There are 2 files to dl...forceaspi 18 and aspichk.exe. The second one checks to see that it went OK. If yes, Nero will also give you a green bar on it. http://forceaspi18.w.interia.pl/ Note: If you get a page with a foreign language, the site is timed out. Try again later, or try http://wombleintheuk.tripod.com/Final/ForceASPI/ForceASPI.htm
Thanks again Doc409 My fastest drive I believe is my SATA 160GB 150 MB/sec with 8 mb cache. Should I partition that drive and install the operating system or just use that whole drive for video. I believe my other drives ATA 100 and 133 only have 2mb cache.
I can't say for sure. I don't have a SATA board that I can check. A lot depends upon your BIOS setup, and if you can set it to boot from your SATA port, because this is what you will have to do. The SATA drive will work faster if you can use it, but I don't know how much, or what kind of performance increase you would get. I think as long as you have a 7200 RPM IDE drive you will get the performance you need, though. If it were me, I think I would want to use the 160 for the video files.
thanks i now have aspi but cpu usage is still running at 100% i dont want my P.C running like this please help
NEONADAM...it is OK for your CPU to run at a constant 100% as long as it is cooled. A reduced CPU speed means it will take longer to encode video filesl. The newer CPU's will slow down if they get too hot, and your bios can also be set to warn you if you get into an overtemp situation. If you still want to slow it down, Shrink has a background mode that you can run in. This will also let you do other tasks while encoding. To access do Edit >> Preferences and check the "Run analysis..." block.
Your mobo should have a manual that tells you how to set up the BIOS. If you don't have the manual, you can probably get the mfgr and model no. off the board itself, and then look it up online. Many boards can be accessed by pressing the Delete key right at startup. Others use a function key like F8. Some startup screens will also tell you what key to press to enter Setup, which is your BIOS. In the BIOS there will be different menus. One will probably be called PC Health Status, and you can enable the CPU Temp warning.
Hi Doc 409 I've redone my computer like you suggested and installed all the updates. Does it matter in which order I install Dvd Shrink, Decrypter, and Nero to ensure that Nero will be an option using shrink. What kind of encoding speeds should I expect with my setup? Does it interfere with speed if I decrypt files to my SATA drive using Decrpter and then encode the files using Shrink on the same drive or should I put them on a seperate drive. If it does make a speed difference should I decrypt on non SATA drive and encode on the SATA drive. Thanks for your help. I will let you know when things are working.
