    Thanks All,

Well my first go turned out to be a success. I managed to back up Shawshank Redemption - okay so the compression was a little high and every now and then it was a little pixilated (is that a word) but hey, i have a 112cm TV so it probably exaggerated it. Thanks all - one happy camper here!!!

    Hi Dsharpe'
Thats good to hear! The hard part is getting the first burn. Now that you know you can do it, you can refine your technique!
A good place to start would be to use the re-author feature of Shrink and just do the main title and see how it looks with less compression.

    Cheers,
    Frank

My suggestion before using the reauthor feature (or Shrink/Nero in general) is to get yourself a DVD-RW disc. That way when you experiment with the different things you can keep or exclude, you're not wasting a DVD-R disc. And you can make a test disc first. Sometimes the Shrink rate is kinda low. Like on Forrest Gump. It comes out to about 60% compression with only 1 of the 4 audio choices selected. So I burned a test disc using a DVD-RW to see how it looks compared to the original. I have a 27inch TV but I use the zoom feature on my DVD player to get a feel for how it would look on a bigger TV. It's not quite accurate but it is a guide. Once you use Shrink you''ll get a feel for what works but it never hurts to have a rewritable lying around. Welcome to the forum.

Oh, I use Win98SE and I wouldn't have it any other way.

dsharpe - Just an addendum. I have had no problems using 'Burnatonce' with Shrink 3.1.4 (and other versions) and it may be an alternative to Nero. Free too :)

Aaaaarrrrrgggg! This is the most frustrating thing ever. Pete, I've been using the little guide you left for dsharpe, following it to the letter and I crap out every time while burning. The files that are in my VIDEO_TS folder have a few different extensions and I'm wondering if this might be the problem? There's .vob, .bup, .ifo files in there. Although I wouldn't think the type of files being burned would prevent Nero from burning them...
Any help from anybody would be much appreciated - I'm ready to snap a coaster and slit my wrists with it, I'm so mad at this!!!

Ooohhhh No Rootsmoke, we don't allow bleeding on the forum, too hard to get good cleaning help :)

You say you're crapping out while burning - are you using a folder named VIDEO_TS to hold all your files ?

(BTW, All those files bup, ifo and vob's are what you're supposed to have :))

Are you following my guide to the letter ?

Lastly, do you have Easy CD Creator on your PC ?

    Pete

BTW, Congrats on being the newest member of our little Club :D)

Oh, cheez, Edith! And I have Roxio on my PC. anyway, I have Nero ROM Ultra and DVD Shrink on my PC. So far, I've had no problems with using DVD Shrink to rip & burn backups of movies. The melding with Nero is seamless.
My suggestion, and I may have missed it in ScubaPete's answer, is to kill all unnecessary processes and programs before rippings and burning. This is especially true if you have antivirus or Zone Alarm running. Both make continual demands on the CPU.
On XP you can use the three fingered salute. I can't remember what the Win98 equivalent is. It might also help to be running win98SE as it allows a little more memory. And just for giggles, try to get another 256 MB of RAM. It'll help both the burning and other apps you may have.

    Hey, thanks
Yes, all the files are in a folder called Video_ts.
No, I don't have this Easy CD Creator - based on my reading here, I'm only using Shrink to rip and Nero 6 to burn. I know a lot of people say the media makes a difference - I'm using Memorex 4.7GB 4x DVD-Rs.

My burner came with Roxio burning software - is it possible to use that? I read that Nero is flakey, but 6 fails of 6 - brutal....

    Thanks Jerry -

    rootsmoke,

I'm sorry there Buddy, I totally missed the last sentence in your post - Roxio may well be a culprit in your troubles - Let's uninstall it and stay with Mr. Nero :p

Remember to reboot after the uninstall, it helps to clean it out -

My friend "Doc" (drchips) has come across some issues dealing with Memorex media - too many "Bad" discs, as I remember, as high as 50 % of a batch coming out as coasters - Be on the look out :)0 -ouch! )

I wonder what Roxio has against us to cause soooo much difficulty with our burners ?

Hello, all. This is a great page and new users seem to get their answers pretty quickly. I have a tdk indidvd 440n burner,in case it matters. I am attempting to backup movies with dvd x copy express. It reads the dvd fine, then writes it, but at the very end, when it says "finalizing", it says the burn failed. Its really driving me crazy!! Any suggestions on what to do? I already downloaded dvd decrypter, dvd shrink, and img tool. I am in the process of downloading the demo of nero. After the 30 days, will I be able to use any other programs to burn with? I think the roxio easy creator's came with my burner.

    zachzchw,

    Delete Roxio !

Then go here and see what else you have to get rid of to use DVD XCopy -

    http://dvdxcopy.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/49908

Our FIRST ORDER OF BUSINESS IS TO GET XCopy WORKING -

    -----------THEN----------

We'll set you up with other things, don't want too much on your plate to start.

[bold]I wrote "Big" so that others don't just jump in and get you confused your first day in the Club[/bold]

To start you off, you I'd like you to stop by the store and pick up an DVD RW to practice with and some "Good" DVD's to work with - Ritek G04 or Verbatim are what we are looking for - good software and proper techniques are no good if you're trying to work with crappy discs :-(

When you have finished that, and we can get you burning with XCopy, we'll teach you about DVD Shrink etc., Sound Good ? OK, see you soon,

    Pete

Thanks pete! I actually have had success burning with dvd x copy, I just begun running into problems when I tried to burn entire discs of some newer movies, like swat, out of time, etc. if I only burned the movie, it worked fine, but if I clicked entire disc, it failed. I figured that was some new kind of copy protection.

I got it to work by doing the iso image, then burning with dvd decrypter. It sucks that I actually paid money for x copy!
