I'm in agreement with Garmoon. If your problem gets solved help some others out by posting that, and what solved it! It helps everyone.
EEEK! I just had the same problem- shrink was working just fine until I tried a newer movie from Sony. I read the whole thread, here, so I'll try the free DVDFAB 5085. Will it also work on older ones? Are there any guides for it?
Here is one of the best and easiest processes to do your dvd's. All are free. dvdfab hd decrypter to rip (freeware) fixvts to 'tweak' the results (freeware0 dvd shrink to compress (freeware) imgburn to burn (freeware)
thanks. I'll give it a shot, and see if I run into any problems. But I'm curious, rtm27, what is FIXVTS, and what "tweaks" would I be doing with it? I'm not very high tech, and I struggle, sometimes, to do simple things that seem to be second nature to some of you. I already ran into a problem, but didn't find a solution, yet, in the guide- I am unable to set DVDFAB (in "movie only") to save it as a DVD5. Can I set DVD9 for custom at 4300?
FixVts is a powerful little tool that renders the files a little cleaner than the initial rip. This helps to improve any little 'messes' left behind by ripping the files. Basically it renders a better playing movie in the end.
Wow, by the time I got back, there were more responses. Okay, obviously different people have different preferences. Having so many options is only confusing me. Is there a generally accepted "best option" software for doing the newer movies, one that has a good track record for updating, and that isn't about to disappear because they got bought or sued? More importantly, one that's idiot proof? I don't require extreme quality, just a viewable movie. The "tweaking" thing is making me nervous, because I have so little know how, in this area. And, can I ask a dumb question? In the above responses, I see a line across the page, and then several of what appear to be links. Are they links the members are suggesting I check out, or is it part of a "signature", or what?
ddvfab does not always give a "clean" rip. inside a dvd there exists a navigation structure that enables a dvd player to "navigate" the disc. In the ripping process, sometimes the navigation pointers gets messed up along the way. fixvts helps by correcting the navigational pointer errors caused by the ripper. hence the"tweaking" as stated by rtm27 IMHO anydvd gives a cleaner rip than dvdfab, but I do own both proggies
The route I laid out with dvdfab is the route I use. Dvdfab has been around for a few years, has been updated frequently, and seems that it will be around for a while, we can hope. Anydvd is another program given, also been around for a few years, also updated frequently, and also seems that it will be around for a while also, we hope. The second link in my signature, is basically a 'one stop shop' for all your ripping needs. It was set up by one of our moderators, and lists some of the best programs for dvd's that the members here have tested and have been proven worthy to use.
Is it as successful at new Sony DVDs? That was what started all this- I'd been using DVDShrink, and suddenly it wouldn't work.
Which version of dvdfab do you have the free/gold/platinum? When you click on 'dvd9' do you see 'dvd5'? If not, then you need dvd shrink, as the free version will not allow you to customize the settings.
Both anydvd and dvdfab plat/gold/hd are usually quite successful with disney movies. If not, then an update to resolve the issues is only days away if in fact not sooner.
Actually, I'm confused about that. I just downloaded it last night, when a previous poster suggested using it. When I open it, I seem to have the option of gold or platinum, but I gather this is a trial download. I was looking for the free version, but version 5085 was what I got. Where do I find the free version? I don't want to spend all my time learning how to use a version I won't have, shortly. Say, can I ask another question? What I've been doing so far (with dvdshrink) is rendering the movie onto my HD, and then simply burning the folders onto a DVDr as data files. They work in my stand alone DVD player, so I assumed this was right proceedure. But is it? Do I need to "close" a DVD after I've done this, or is there a different proceedure I should follow, than I've been using? Is the result a "real DVD"?
the free version is on the lower part of the left side toolbar. should be dvdfabHD Could rephrase ? I don't quite understand your question
