DVD Shrink is a transcoder with the ability to rip discs. IT can make a movie fit on a DVD5 when it is too large by compressing it. You can also remove additional languages and such.

DVD Decrypter is a DVD ripper. It can rip to an ISO (disc image/ISO Read Mode) or DVD Folder (File Mode). You can also choose to parse the IFOs and rip by PGCs, cells, etc... (IFO Mode).

It can also demux (separate audio, video, subs).

Both are no longer updated. DVD Shrink is still one of the best transcoders. It gives very good quality and it is free!!! DVD Decrytper was last updated in about June of 2005, so it cannot rip some Sony ARccOS movies without some help. You can either manually update via a PSL (this is only temporary update and has to be applied each time the movie is ripped) or follow the manual ARccOS guide that I wrote:

    http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/260734

DVD Decrypter should be used for ripping the DVD. It can handle many more titles than DVD Shrink and is the best ripper out there.

If you encounter a problem DVD, you can look for a PSL file, use the manual method, or use an alternate like DVDFab Decrypter (free) or AnyDVD ($30).

Here are a couple of guides to help you in backing up your DVDs:

    http://www.files.bz/files/4515/DVD Decrypter Shrink Backup.pdf
    http://www.files.bz/files/4515/VobBlanker_Guide.pdf

The first is a guide to Shrink, Decrypter and ImgBurn and the second is a guide to VobBlanker. It has been a while since I updated the guides, but they will get you through 99% of the movies out there.
