Hi, When I burn a dvd everything works fine. The problem though is that every few seconds or minutes it skips a couple of seconds forward. When I rewind that section to play again, it plays ok in most cases. But there are a few of these and it makes watching difficult. It seems as if the dvd is to fast for the dvd player, because when I use another dvd player, there are no skips. Still, I want to be able to play it fine on my dvd player. I am using dvd shrink(which uses Nero to burn). The write speed is 16 x. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Hi 1) If using Nero 8, it is not compatible with dvd shrink 2) Burn slower, 8x max 3) Use good media as Taiyo Yuden or Sony 4) don't multitask while burning 5) burn with Imgburn instead of Nero (much better IMHO)
Brother Iluvedo is spot on. Even tho most media may say 16x, the higher the burn speed the greater chance for errors. Rule of thumb is burn half of what media is rated, but no faster than 8x. Edit: spelling

Thanks for suggestions. I like Imgburn as well. Does a great job. Its just that for some dvd's Imgburn won't work for me so I use DVDshrink (great as well). So I re-burned my dvd (I encoded with dvdshrink and burned with Imgburn)and the result was the same. Then I did the same thing again but at 4x speed, and the result was much improved, but still with some skips. What I'll do next is burn at 1x and hope that all skips are gone. I just have a couple of more questions. 1. Could the encoding with dvdshrink affect the subsequent burn with Imgburn?(speedwise) 2. Are there any drawbacks to using 1x speed other than time. 3. Is firmware an issue in this case? Thanks
Just forgot to mention that I was using Nero 6.6. Forgot to ask one question. Is quality of picture an issue with lower speeds? In my case, I haven't noticed any difference.
Burning 4-6-8 x is fine. What media are you burning onto ? This could be the source of your problems.
no, burn speed has no effect on picture quality, just playback and keeping the media read/error free for a long period of time
I'm using Maxwells. My dvd player that these skip on is a GE. The dvd player that the dvd's in question work fine on is a Samsung. Oddly enough my dvd burner is a Samsung.
Try another brand. The real 'Rule of thumb' is to get media that is a good match for your burner, one size does not fit all. If you have to slow the burn down you are using the wrong brand. If you click the link in my sig you will see that many times media on the right burner can be burned faster that it's rated speed with excellent results. I burn my 8X TYG02's at 12X with my Pioneer burner.
I agree with MysticE...... I use Taiyo Yuden, DVD+R, 8x and my BenQ1655 external can burn these babies at 16x!! with excellent results! but I burn at 8x just to make sure..... without a coaster in over 2000 burns with Yuden000T02s! this is all I use! I think Taiyo Yuden is the best.
@dvdwin....... just to lay something straight.... the main reason why you are getting freezing, skipping, pixelations are due to your player not being able to read your disk properly! using better media that is most recognized by players is the #1 remedy! your burner is fine... your programs are fine... following iluvendo suggestions are right on! there is one more thing you can do to make your disk more recognized by your player... BOOKTYPE your drive to burn your +R media to DVD-ROM.... read this and try to set your burner to booktype your +R media to DVD-ROM: http://k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php 1. good media (Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim recommended as most compatible). 2. burn at half the rated speed of your media to assure no reading errrors by players. 3. Booktype to DVD-ROM for all your +R media! follow these rules and you won't have skipping, freezing or pixelations! one more thing Make sure your burner's firmware is up-to-date!
I agree. If you have to slow it down, something else is wrong. I would have liked to have tried the Booktype, but my dvdplayer is -R. I'll try changing media. Thanks again guys.
@ dvdwin You also might want to Clean the Laser in the player. My player was staring to skip when I played Backups in it. I went to Radio Shack and bought thier Brand of Laser cleaner for 23 Bucks, ran it through the player and I haven't had a problem in over 3 weeks. The other Advice that iluvendo gave is great Advice.
@dvdwin I had a GE brand DVD player, gave it to my mother in law, it didn't like the +r media even those that were booktyped to DVD-ROM. I replaced it with a $19.99 Toshiba player which handles everything flawlessly. I have found that using the -R variety, Verbatim, Sony have given better results in the GE when they are burned at 8X-12X. I don't have the model in front of me so I'm not sure of the model number, but it was purchased about 5 years ago. You might want to try various disks in the various formats to find a better match, or buy a cheapie player. FYI, the latest version of Nero 6 is 6.6.1.15c you can find it here
Great suggestions. I'll try giving the laser a clean. If that doesn't work, I'll just buy a new player. A 19.99 Toshiba sounds pretty good to me. Thanks
It does.. usually the cheaper the better.. for some reason they prefer cheap disks. Standalone players more than 2 years old seem to have a lot of problems with the 16x media.. if they see the disks at all. I have found that a horrid old nec 1100 burner actually does a better burn on 16x disks for my xbox and grotty old dansai than my new samsung burner is capable of.. perhaps it is because it will only burn at 2.4x or maybe it does a stronger burn.. who knows.. the scans look awful but the samsung 16x disks (moser-baer.. avoid) play just fine.
Go figure, my 8 year old Philips 793C 5 disk changer does great with the 16X media burned in my Lite-on drives, a 16X and a 20X Light Scribe, just goes to show different combos work for different people.
