What programs you using? It may well be the set up on your TV/DVD player

When I got my last DVD player I had the same problem...widescreen movies showing up full-screen and no subtitles visible.
I had to go to the player's setup screen and specify whether I had a 4:3 or a 16:9 TV -> it turned out the stretching was because the player was treating my 4:3 TV like a widescreen (16:9) display.
    Hope that helps!

I do a side business setting up home theatres. Many new DVD players are set to "stretch" the image, because people were complaining about the "black bars."

As Yuriv said, there will be something in the menu to adjust the video.
