Hello, I have an older sharp tv with only a coaxial input and video (Yellow) audio (red-White) inputs. For now this is all I can afford. I have a Yamaha Rx-V730 receiver and a simple DVD player. The question is what is the best way to hook this up so I can get better sound (other then the Tv's speakers)and what do I need? I do not have a cable box the connection for cable goes right into the coaxial input from the wall, Thanks in advance.

    1. What is the make and model of the DVD player?
    2. Your Yammie is an AVR; how many speakers are you using and where, i.e. Fronts, surrounds, center, sub??

Hi Gerry 1 , I am using my Bose sattelite speakers three for the front and Bose 201's for the rear. also my sub is a bose(non powered). Like I said I'm on a budget now so I can't afford a center speaker. My DVD player is an Apex (cheep) but it plays everything. Thanks for your help

Hi rab48124! ...Let me see if I understand this correctly: your TV has the regular cable coaxial without a box...goes directly to your TV. Also, your TV has one auxilliary video input (yellow) with a corresponding audio in (Red and White)...so you have one coaxial for the cable and one aux video/audio in but absolutely NO video and audio out??

    2. You have a passive sub; what is it connected to? ...the two fronts or does the AVR have a regular speaker connection for the sub (like the ones for the fronts)...I saw that it has a line out for a powered sub, but I couldn't see it well enough to see if it has a passive connection (Nice receiver, by the way)

    3. You said that you have three Bose front sattelite speakers?? Left front, Right front and....????

    4. What kind of outputs does your dvd player have. I'm sure it has the regular two channel output but what about:

    a) Optical Output
    b) component (this will be three RCA type each probably has a red, green or blue stripe and where they connect to the DVD player probably has lettering like Y/Pb/Pr.
    c) Does it have 5.1 out? These would also be RCA type...one for each channel and would be marked Front Right, Front Left, Center, Subwoofer, Left Surround, Right Surround.

Sorry about all the questions but need to know....Gerry

I think I have the same Bose speakers for the fronts as him. It's basically treated as two large front speakers, with the left and right satelites handling midrange to high with the sub handling the lows, but the receiver doesn't see the system as having a sub. If that makes sense. Everything else you seem to have under control though gerry :)

Hi DarkJello! How have you been? Have you decided what you're going to do about your speakers? (That's what it was, I think!). So what your saying is that the "third front speaker" is the sub?

Yea but it just takes the left/right input from the receiver. I'm leaning towards the m22ti bookshelfs recommended on audioholics, but I need another 150 dollars or so. Should have it in a few weeks though then I'll be sure to let you know how they are :)

Hey Rab....don't forget to check the back of your TV to see if there are video and "audio outs". Many TVs don't have a video out but that's usually the newer TVs ...hollywoods war on the consumer, but most TVs have an audio out. In fact, some older models will have two sets of "audio out" jacks ... one is "variable" the other is "fixed" a newer TV will usually control that with a menu from the remote. Lastly, on most TVs for last five six years, you have to turn the TV speakers off in order to activate the the audio out jacks. If you're not sure if it has audio out jacks and you lost the operators manual, tell me the model and I'll try to find the specs....Gerry

    gerry1...........
I think the easiest way for rab48124 (not having output from tv), is to use a stereo vcr. I think you understand what I mean, without me getting into a long explanation? I'm such a slow typist..........

If it's a regular analog cable box, you should be able to get the channels offered, except for pay channels, of course. It kinda sounds like it's a digital cable box. If so, you can probably put a splitter between the cable box and the tv in the living room, but will only be able to see the same channel being watched in livingroom. Only way to see a different channel in the bedroom, with a digital cable box, is to get another cable box.
